Parent Night on Bullying
As stated above, we will have a late start on Monday, October 15th. Mr. Terry Stulken will be meeting with district staff during the morning to talk more about bullying. The students will hear from him throughout the day, and then there is a meeting for parents in the evening. All parents are invited and encourage to attend! You can find the link to the Facebook invite here or via the link below! I will also link the District's Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as the De Smet School website for your convenience. If you aren't already following the school's social media pages, I encourage you to like/follow them!
Math
We have completed our first unit in Math, which focused on multiplication and division, and are starting Unit 2, which focuses on finding the volume of objects. We will continue to review those multiplication and division strategies during this unit as well. The family letter that outlines what we will do in Unit 2 can be found in the documents below.
We are two weeks into the multiplication fact challenge and I have noticed that the kids are working pretty hard on knowing their facts. I am proud of their hard work, but have challenged them to keep it up! We will be working on x5 and x10 next week!
Fall/Halloween Party
I just want to thank everyone that volunteered to help with parties this year, and to be helpers in the classroom as needed! Mrs. Poppen sent out an email with a link to sign up for the party on October 31st. Thank you to those that have already volunteered. If you are interested in helping out, we still need a host or two for the party and someone to help plan a fun game/activity! you can find the link below. If you need help signing up, let me know!
Working on Writing!
This groups of young writers has really worked hard so far this year to build their writing skills! Almost every morning, we start with writing in our morning journals, and then most days there is more writing throughout the day! They really have creative ideas and I am proud of them for their efforts! I introduced them to WriteAbout.com this week. It is a great website that allows them to write on any topic of their choice, or search the site for ideas to spark their writing. They are loving it!
Vocab Review
We used one of our favorite game websites to review our vocab words from week 1 of Refugee. Quizlet Live is such a fun way to work as a team to polish up on those vocabulary words!
Coding! Animate a Name Project
I introduced the kids to Scratch, which is an online computer coding website. I gave them their first challenge, which was to animate a name of their choice. They were so excited to work on it. They can work on it from home if they want by visiting the Scratch website (linked below). I also included the website that has help videos too. We will keep working on it this coming week, so watch for some finished projects in the near future! Ask your child to tell you more about this project. It really is amazing how fast they learn how to code!
Bulldog Store is Back!
A big THANK YOU to the LIW PTO for bringing The Bulldog Store back to LIW this year. The 5th graders were able to cash in their paw points for prizes on Friday!
