Persian Gulf War
The Gulf War started when Iraq needed money after the war with Iran which ended in 1988. Iraq's neighbor Kuwait was rich, because it produced oil. To get control of Kuwait's oil, president Saddam Hussein of Iraq sent in troops on August 2, 1990. Kuwait fell quickly to the Iraq's. United Nations(U.N) disagreed with Iraq and what they were doing so they threatened them with military force unless they got out of Kuwait by January 15, 1991. The U.S thought Iraq might try to get oil from Saudi, Arabia. The U.S sent forces there to make sure they were protected. This military build-up was called Operation Desert Shield. By January 1991 there were about 700,000 troops from the U.S, U.K, France, Canada, Australia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and more. Saddam ignored the U.N and built up his army in Kuwait to about 300,000 troops. The night of January 16-17 the Gulf War began with a massive attack on Iraq by allied war planes. This was called Operation Desert Storm. The ground attack Operation Desert Sabor followed on February 23-24. Within 4 days, Iraq troops stopped fighting. Arab and U.S forces easily recaptured Kuwaits capitol. The war ended on February 27, 1991. About 300 allied soldiers and thousands of Iraqis died in the war.
Results of The Persian Gulf War
The U.N already banned most trade with Iraq before the war. The ban remained in force after the fighting ended. The U.N told Iraq that it must destroy most of its weapons. The U.N sent inspectors to Iraq to make sure they were destroying the weapons. In 1998, Iraq stopped cooperating with the inspectors. This led to another war that started in 2003.
On September 11, 2001, 4 planes were hijacked by a terrorist group called al Qaeda. Two of them crashed into the Twin Towers at The World Trade Center. The Twin Towers were crashed into about 20 minutes apart. Both also collapsed, the south one first then the North. The third crashed into the Pentagon, and the fourth crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania. This plane probably had another target. The passengers in the fourth plane that crashed supposedly got control of the plane again.
War on Terror
After 9/11 president George W. Bush annouced that al Qaeda would pay. He then launched a ''War on Terror''. In October 2001, U.S and allied forces attacked Afganistan where al Qaeda was based. They then drove out rulers who protected al Qaeda. They also hunted for al Qaedas leader Osama bin Laden. U.S forces finally located and killed bin Laden on May 1, 2011.
