The Cyclone Watch
Jefferson Middle School - A STEAM Academy - November 2022
From the Principal
- Parent Teacher Conferences - November 15 and 17, from 3:00-6:30p.m. each evening. Teachers will be reaching out to you individually regarding scheduling a conference. We offer both in-person and virtual conferences.
- We will not have school November 7 and 8. Schools are closed for teacher training.
We appreciate the continued efforts of our PTSA. They have recently sponsored the first of three events for our STAR program. The event was a pizza party for all that qualified. This is just one example of the many benefits provided to JMS through our PTSA. Some others include:
- STAR event number two, either a movie event or bowling.
- STAR event number three, a professional baseball game.
- Teacher Appreciation
- Student t-shirts for all students.
- Grants for use in teacher's classrooms.
- Direct support for existing clubs.
- Support for end of the year activities for all grade levels.
Our PTSA is only able to provide this continued support with your help. Please consider donating to our PTSA no work fundraiser. We are currently $3500.00 short of our goal to meet all budgetary needs for this school year. Any support is greatly appreciated. Please see the links below:

JMS Media Center
The changes just keep happening here in the media center. We have all of our new furniture. It has had rave reviews. We now have room for classes to sit together and learn here in our space. We have a place for students to decompress with coloring, marble run and chess. Connect 4 has enough space for the large crowds that gather to play it daily. We have our new mobile shelves. They look super in our space, and we have displays on them that all can see. We love how the media center is coming together. We have started receiving our monthly books from Skylark. These were advertised in the daily announcements. We continue to order books from student requests, so please encourage your reader to let us know if we don't have the book they really want to read.
The media center is open before school and we are getting several friends every morning. Students are drawing on our white board tables, playing games, building our newly donated LEGO set of NYC skyline, and of course, checking out books. We have games that challenge the mind as well. We are a happy, loud and energy-filled space. Students here before school are happy and play games and talk. What a great way to start the day at JMS!
iPads are "lost" frequently here at JMS. Please help us help our students by checking that the CPS iPad has a sticker with the student's first and last name. Also helpful is having their face or their names on the lock screen. If there is no way to identify the iPad to the student, we are forced to search by other means and this takes time that students are without iPads. iPads should come to school charged daily.

This month's JMS book recommendation
Hummingbird by Natalie Lloyd
Twelve-year-old homeschooled Olive is tired of being seen as “fragile” just because she has osteogenesis imperfecta (otherwise known as brittle bone disease) so she’s thrilled when she finally convinces her parents to let her attend Macklemore Elementary. Olive can’t wait to go to a traditional school and make the friends she’s always longed for, until a disastrous first day dashes her hopes of ever fitting in.
Then Olive hears whispers about a magical, wish-granting hummingbird that supposedly lives near Macklemore. It’ll be the solution to all her problems! If she can find the bird and prove herself worthy, the creature will make her most desperate, secret wish come true.
When it becomes clear that she can’t solve the mystery on her own, Olive teams up with some unlikely allies who help her learn the truth about the bird.
TNADO News
T-NADO (The Non-Alcohol and Drug Organization) had their first meeting on Monday, October 24th. They hosted a Halloween Party with lots of good food and games. Their next activity will be volunteering at the Central Missouri Food Bank Nov. 28th from 3-5 p.m. Any student interested in volunteering should let Ms. Moore in Guidance know by
Nov. 21st. Students can e-mail Ms. Moore at bmoore@cpsk12.org or come by and talk. If any parents want to join us you are welcome to attend as well.
JMS Fall Into Reading
Come out to support our JMS Cyclones as we once again take over Barnes and Noble in Columbia Mall to showcase our many talents. Our in-store party will be held from 6:30-7:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2022. Our online bookfair will run from 11/10/2022-11/14/2022. Along with raising funds for our reading department to buy books all year long, we will host a picture book drive for Nora Stewart Early Learning Center. Come to BN the night of our party to buy a book for Nora Stewart Early Learning Center or bring gently used and new picture books to Mrs. Osborn in 207.
