Appearance-

Unique animal, only Cetacean known to have long ivory tusk that extends from upper left side of jaw. Ranges from 13-20 ft. in length, and weighs as much as 3,500 lbs!

Diet-

Hunt for flatfish, cod, shrimp, Gonatus squid, and other prey.

Range-

Inhibit Arctic Ocean year round and move from coastal to off shore locations during migration periods.

Threats-

Stable. Current pop. 25,000-45,000

Reproduction-

14-15 gestation period. Nursing 1 1/2- 2 years for healthy development.

Communication-

Communicate using high pitched clicks, whistles, squeaks, and bangs. Used to inform other whales of information and keep track of pod members.
