Around the School
The first month of school has gone by fast in the music room! Grand View Elementary students are fully immersed in Creating, Performing and Responding, as per the national standards they are expected to master for music. Creating includes improvising and notating melodies. Students have experimented in creating their own rhythms based on “building blocks” they learned last year, and will soon be writing down their own compositions. Mr. Meyers’ class is using the rhythms they learned last year, while Mrs. Lawrence’s class and Mrs. Malika’s classes will soon be adding new and advanced rhythms. Grand View students are responding by listening and discussing or dancing to music. Often they discuss an emotion felt by a song, or images conjured by it. Sometimes Ms. Davis’s class listens to a song and dances to it as they see fit based on the music, or Ms. Baker’s class draws what they hear and helps tell a story through music. Performing is the most exciting standard for Ms. Volk’s students, because it means they get to sing and play instruments! Ms. Davis’s class is enjoying learning all the unpitched percussion instruments in their farm unit, and will begin soon to explore high and low on mallet instruments. Ms. Baker’s and Mr. Meyer’s classes have moved right on to playing patterns and notes on all the different mallet instruments and they are really excited to play actual melodies! The fourth and fifth graders began learning the recorder at the end of September, after weeks of anticipation. They will master one note at a time, and are learning to read the actual notes on the staff!
Caught Using Kelso's Choices!
Classroom Corner
Mr. Meyers (Third): Third grade has been learning cursive, and we have just finished learning the lowercase letters! In math, we are working hard on using arrays, tape diagrams, and learning our multiplication facts. We are finishing our reading unit about how people help each other and are going to get into the new unit focusing on nature's balance.
Mrs. Lawrence & Mrs. Gibbons (Fourth): The 4th graders are currently learning about rocks and minerals during science. We have been looking at igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks that are currently on display in our classroom. Students have been bringing in many interesting rocks to share with their classmates. We will soon move on to learning more about volcanoes and craters of the Moon.
Mrs. Malika (Fifth): Fifth grade has been working hard since the beginning of the school year! We have finished our units on volume of cubes, alternative energy, introductory writing, and are currently finishing up our study on different cultures around the world! Right now, the fifth graders are studying our solar system in science, and in social studies, we are studying the Columbian Exchange. In math, we are working on graphing within a coordinate plane. Reading has us looking towards studying different types of folktales.

At Home
During Community Groups, our students have been learning about a Growth Mindset using ClassDojo's Big Ideas series #1. ClassDojo teamed up with Stanford's Project for Education Research That Scales (PERTS) center to produce a series of 5 videos on growth mindset.
What is a growth mindset?
Carol Dweck conceptualized the idea of a growth mindset in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.
A mindset, according to Dweck, is a self-perception or “self-theory” that people hold about themselves. Believing that you are either “intelligent” or “unintelligent” is a simple example of a mindset. People may also have a mindset related their personal or professional lives—“I’m a good teacher” or “I’m a bad parent,” for example. People can be aware or unaware of their mindsets, according to Dweck, but they can have profound effect on learning achievement, skill acquisition, personal relationships, professional success, and many other dimensions of life.
The major differences between a growth and a fixed mindset is that, in a fixed mindset, people have a goal to look smart all the time and never look dumb or less than. In a growth mindset, people understand that intelligence can be developed. Instead of worrying about how smart or good you are at something, a person with a growth mindset will focus on improvement and work hard to learn more. Failures become a thing of joy in a growth mindset, because it means that you are working out your brain.
Questions from Episode 1:
- Why does Mojo want to leave school?

- What does Katie say to Mojo to convince him not to leave?
- Do you think Mojo can become smarter? Why or why not?
- What subject do you feel frustrated by sometimes?
- Can you see yourself becoming smarter in that subject? How?
Some Questions You Can Ask at Home:
- What was the biggest challenge you faced today? (Ask your child, and then have them ask you the question back!)
- How can you and I think about these challenges in a new way?
- What can we do differently tomorrow if we face similar challenges?
