Two Gases Lab

Experimental Errors

-not waiting 30 seconds

-unstopper before inverting

-break surface water with test tube

-don't collect full test tube of gas

-air bubble in test tube

-stoppers not tight

-not keeping test tubes vertical

Extra Question

ON BOTH DAYS OF THE TWO GASES LAB, GROUP COLLECTS 400 mL OF GAS PER DAY. WHAT WOULD THE MASS OF EACH GAS COLLECTED?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANSWER IN DECIMAL AND SCIENTIFIC NOTATION:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hydrogen: 3.36x10^-3 g/cm^3:::::::::::OR:::::::::::0.0336 g/cm^3

Carbon Dioxide: 7.2x10^-1g/cm^3 :::::::::::::OR:::::::::::: .72 g/cm^3

Where does the "POP" come from?

When the gas is ignited and rushes out of the tes tube, it rubs against the glass which causes friction (sound).

Magnesium Carbonate and Acid

-more dense than air

-dense gas sinks

-the upright test tube is filled with carbon dioxide and the gas cannot escape

-the inverted test tube is filled with air and the gas escapes

Magnesium and Acid

-less dense than air

-light gas rises

-the upright test tube is filled with air and the gas escapes

-the inverted test tube is filled with hydrogen and the gas cannot escape

28) Cold water has more oxygen

29) a. 0.385

b. the water would fill the bottle because there is not enough gas to saturate the solution

30) a. It's undissolving

b. Too much pressure/gas gets built up in the top of the bottle

c. The Carbon Dioxide redissolves into the liquid.
