Academic News
World Language Department
Spanish
On Monday, November 26, 2018 approximately 91 students from across all grade levels, who take Spanish, attended a field trip to see a dance performance show featuring a variety of traditional and contemporary dance and music from Hispanic nations of the Caribbean, Central and South America. Lower Moreland students were called onto the stage to dance with the performers!
LMHS French students immersed themselves in the Québecois culture as they traveled to Montréal and Québec in the beginning of November. It was an amazing opportunity to speak French, learn about Québecois history, explore two beautiful cities and have fun all at the same time. The students participated in walking tours, a treasure hunt, a ghost tour and guided visits to the famous basilicas of Basilique Ste-Anne-de Beaupré and Notre Dame. They walked across a footbridge directly over the famous Montmorency Water Fall in Québec and climbed to the top of Mount Royale in Montréal for panoramic views. The students became soldiers while entering an interactive history lesson inside an historic Martello Tower. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting a French-Canadian Cabane à Sucre (Sugar Shack) in the snowy mountains of Québec. The students learned how to tap the trees to make maple syrup, partook in an all-you-can-eat dinner of typical Québecois fare, learned traditional dances and folk songs and mastered the art of playing spoons. The students engaged in educational, fun-filled activities that will leave them with lasting memories.
Gifted Program
Gifted students form the high school recently attended a lecture by Dr. Francis Halzen at Drexel University. The Kaczmarczik Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Physics, is a significant event on Drexel's campus. Numerous Nobel Laureates and renowned scientists have been invited in recent years to address the audience on topics ranging from mapping the universe to revolutions in fundamental physics. The lecture by Dr. Halzen focused on The IceCube project at the geographic South Pole. Scientists melted eighty-six holes over 1.5 miles deep in the Antarctic icecap to construct an enormous astronomical observatory. The experiment recently discovered a flux of neutrinos reaching us from the cosmos, with energies more than a thousand times those of neutrinos produced at accelerator laboratories. These cosmic neutrinos are astronomical messengers coming from some of the most violent processes in the universe and from the biggest explosions since the Big Bang. Recently it was discovered that some high-energy neutrinos—and cosmic rays—originate from sources powered by rotating supermassive black holes. Prior to the lecture the students were able to engage with different research groups from within the Physics Department.

Physical Education Department
Bob Kelly from Fox29 Good Day Philadelphia recently joined the High School Health and Physical Education Department for a segment called “Kelly’s Classroom” on Tuesday 11/13/18. His segment was brought to LMHS by Mrs. Colleen Quinn-Maxwell to spotlight the numerous grant opportunities and initiatives that the High School Health and Physical Education Department acquired in the last year by both Mrs. Maxwell and Mrs. Deb Lawlor. We had the support of student musicians, cheerleaders, athletes, teachers, administrators and staff for a fun filled morning.
One of the spotlighted grants was the Sun Safety Sunscreen dispensers acquired from the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation for the high school, middle school and newly formed Students Against Melanoma Club. Members of the SAM Club were a part of the show. We are the 1st Sun Safe School in PA and 1st SAM club in PA! Students in our physical education program showcased one of our Foundations grant of IHT Spirit Heart Rate monitors in which students in our PE classes on authentically assessed daily with their use. We also spotlighted our LMTSD Mini Grant and Donor Choose grants for Stand Up Paddle boarding for our physical education swimming classes this year. Lastly, we were so appreciative to thank and demonstrate the comfort of our flexible seating grant in our health classroom by both the Foundations Committee, High School and PTA support. We are so thankful to be able to offer our students exciting and innovative learning activities and settings at Lower Moreland High School and Bob Kelly was able to show the tri state area how we are on the cutting edge of our profession.
