Fifth Grade PEAK
January 23 and January 26
THEME:
- Students started feature magazine articles. We highlighted the necessary tools to write a feature magazine article - we discussed angles, leads, subtitles, details with depth, conclusions, and how to incorporate an authentic piece of research into their article - interview with an expert, survey, observation, etc.
Centers
Enrichment Centers:
Topic Study: We continue to work on independent research topics. Students are challenged to complete a project that reflect his/her learning style, shows depth of knowledge on a higher level of Bloom's Taxonomy, and answer/reflect on essential questions that are driving research.Math: Students work a their own pace through a series of algebraic lessons.
Science: We are wrapping up our solar unit. Your child will conduct four science experiments prior to our solar contest.
Personal Growth and Development
- Self- Regulation Goal Setting: Students learned about self-regulating behaviors such as:
extend effort when faced with challenge
be able to focus for long periods of time
set specific goals
self-monitor
adapt efforts to the task
These self regulating behaviors help students:
Time
Study environment
Using peers and adults to help you
Self-efficacy or the belief that you can do something through effort
Set goals
Learn how to control anxiety or other emotions that get in the way of learning
Use metacognition
Practice thinking at the higher levels of Bloom’s
- Personality Style inventories: Students are completing a series of personality inventories. After each inventory, students write reflections and discuss outcomes with peers. Our purpose is to focus on ourselves as learners and learn how to maximize our learning opportunities and get along with our peers.

- Optimism vs. Pessimism
- Introvert vs. Extrovert
- Learning Style Inventory (Auditory, Kinesthetic, Visual)

Technology Buzz:
- Today students worked on their own Google Site -- we will use it as a portfolio to house PEAK work
Kahoot It:
- Students participated in an on-line quiz game that tested students' knowledge on the scientific method. The students have learned a lot about science this year!!!!

- We have organized our Google Drives
- Practiced sharing and saving documents
- Bookmarked important websites
- Actively working in Google Classroom

- Set up an account for our note taking research
Cacoo:
- Online Graphic Organizer tool to organize headings and subheadings
Powtoons:
- Set up a PEAK Powtoons account -- many have completed a vocabulary presentation in topic study via Powtoons.
Classroom Book Source:
- Students learned how to check out books electronically from my classroom library.
Tweet:
- There is a link on my student resource page for students to "Tweet" about the day. We will post 5 tweets a week on my classroom board - some even make it to real twitter.
