Wheeler Flash
November 2015
Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
I Hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! The teaching and learning continued to move full throttle at Wheeler during the month of November and now the holidays are around the corner!
Over the next few days in each K-5 classroom, I will be doing a powerpoint presentation reviewing our leader of the PACK expectations at Wheeler School. This is an opportunity for students to again, hear from me the social/behavioral expectations in many different environments (lunch, wellness, recess ) at Wheeler School. I also believe it serves as a positive reinforcement of the message our teachers deliver every day to our students and that you deliver at home.
During this time, I also review a four important concepts:
1. Self Advocating: Through concrete examples, I encourage students defend themselves appropriately when someone is mean to them. I demonstrate exactly how to respond in this manner.
2. Notifying an adult: After self-advocating, I emphasize the importance of letting an adult know immediately when you feel harmed verbally or physically. I explain the difficulty in understanding the context of what occurred if students wait days or weeks to tell an adult.
3. Safety in doing the right thing: I inform students that telling a student you don't like the way he or she is treating you and then informing their parents is the right thing to do. In doing this, all other students, teachers and parents to support you because that is the right, safe thing to do.
4. See something, say something: If you see someone or something unsafe or someone experiencing wrong doing, let an adult know immediately.
The list below describes only a handful of pro-social activities that are embedded in the culture at Wheeler School:
Teachers deliver up to 22 lessons from our second steps curriculum that teach empathy, relationship skills, and regulating one's own feelings and behavior.
1-2 assemblies a year with a guest performer who models a message around positive behaviors.
Individual student goal setting
Students earn and manage PACK tickets for desired behaviors and participate in leader of the PACK activities if they choose to cash in their tickets.
Leader of the PACK certificates on Fridays.
Positive messages on the announcements each morning.
We have a strong positive behavioral support system at Wheeler School. One that has been cultivated over time and works to develop good citizenship in our students.
