Grade 1
We are beginning Topic 6 in math. Our students will learn to collect, organize and represent data. Among the tools they will use are surveys, tally marks, and picture graphs. Students will solve word problems that compare the data in their graphs. They will be able to answer questions that ask “how many more” and “how many fewer.”We will continue to work with addition and subtraction equations through independent work and centers.
Grade 2
It’s about time! In math, grade 2 students are starting to learn about time and money! We are finding that students have some difficulty reading an analogue clock, so any help that families can give our students at home would benefit them a great deal. The topic also covers identifying coins and $1 and $5 bills. There’s nothing like the real thing, so why not have your student count a bunch of coins? We are about to begin our “Trip Around the World” , which is both a Language Arts AND Social Studies unit. Our first stop will be Antarctica. The plane leaves on February 3. Check your child’s Tuesday folder next week for details!
Grade 3
Third graders are working on analyzing data and reading information presented in graphs and charts. They are using bar graphs and picture graphs to solve word problems. Representing and interpreting data has many real world applications. Ask your child to help you read a weather chart or box scores (win/loss records) for your favorite sports team!.
Our students are also continuing to work on ST Math on their tablets. This program provides students the opportunity to practice using visual math skills while solving math challenges and puzzles.
Grade 4
As we continue our exploration of fractions in fourth grade, we are enjoying hands on activities, working with manipulatives, and challenging our thinking about how equal parts look. In reading we are looking forward to studying the genre of historical fiction. Students will add to their background knowledge about World War I, World War II, and issues of the time through read alouds, maps, and discussions as we prepare to read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. In writing, we are finishing up our opinion pieces, revising, editing, and publishing!
Grade 5
This week in Grade 5, we completed our mid-year benchmark testing in ELA and Math. Civil Rights was a hot topic in Social Studies and read-alouds in connection with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Students are continuing to write about their reading through Reader Response Letters, particularly noticing author's craft techniques and providing evidence. Mrs. Kuketz and Mrs. Marinelli's classes had a little fun with learning songs to help with long division strategies that had an "island vibe" and reggae touch.
