How Can I Help my Child at Home?
Math- What is Partitioning?
Partitioning is a way of working out maths problems that involve large numbers by splitting them into smaller units so they’re easier to work with. So, instead of adding numbers in a column, like this…
79
+34
113
…younger students will first be taught to separate each of these numbers into units, like this…
70 + 9 + 30 + 4
…and they can add these smaller parts together. For instance, they can pick out all the tens and work down to single units, making the problem more and more manageable, like this…
70 + 30 + 9 + 4 = 100 + 13 = 113
Why partitioning?
Children are taught this method before they learn to add numbers in columns. Partitioning gives children a different way of visualizing maths problems and helps them work out large sums in their head. By breaking numbers down into units that are easy for them (and us!) to calculate mentally, they can reach the correct answer without counting out tricky double or triple-digit numbers on their fingers or trying to remember where a decimal point needs to be in their later learning.
Reading - Comprehension Strategy - Monitor and Clarify
The Monitoring/Clarifying strategy teaches students to recognize when they don't understand parts of a text and to take necessary steps to restore meaning. This technique is a component of the Reciprocal Teaching model (see below for more information) in which teachers encourage students to think about their own thought process during reading. Monitoring/Clarifying helps students learn to be actively involved and monitor their comprehension as they read.
Monitoring/Clarifying helps students to focus their attention on the fact that there may be reasons why the text is difficult to understand. Students can be taught to ask questions, reread, restate, and visualize making the text more comprehensible.
Miller Links
Miller Links are given to the entire class of students for exhibiting positive behavior. When a class gets 10, 25, and 50, the class receives a classroom reward from a predetermined list of rewards. When a class earns 62 links and hits the floor, the class will receives a classroom reward, and the teacher will add to the “Hit the Floor” tag to the classroom graph.

Friendly Reminder from Nurse Johnson
WHEN TO KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
Students should not attend school in the following circumstances:
- Signs of severe illness, including fever, irritability, difficulty breathing, crying that doesn’t stop with the usual comforting, or extreme sleepiness.
- Diarrhea (3 or more episodes of loose stools in 24 hours). A child must be diarrhea free for 24 hours without the use of diarrhea suppressing medications.
- Vomiting two or more times in 24 hours, unless a physician feels the cause of vomiting is not an infectious disease and the child is in no danger of becoming dehydrated. A child should have one or two meals without vomiting before returning to school. Your child may be sent home from school for vomiting one time.
- Temperature of 100 degrees or above. A child must have temperature below 100 degrees for 24 hours before returning to school without taking a fever reducing medication.
- Questionable rash until a physician has determined the rash is not caused by an infectious disease.
- Known communicable disease must be treated for the appropriate amount of time as directed by a physician.
- Recommendation of a physician or school nurse.
- If a child becomes ill while at school, faculty and staff do their best to isolate him or her and contact parents promptly to pick up their student.
Please note: If you would like your child to receive oral nonprescription medication at school, such as Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl, Tums, Cough Drops and Throat Strips, you must bring the medication to the school nurse and complete the Request for Administration of Medication form. Click here to review the medication policy guidelines.
Find great information in the Health Services Department and Learn more about efforts in Frisco ISD to prevent the spread of disease.
We have also discussed ways to prevent spread of infection. Ask your kiddo about the fun lesson we did regarding spread of germs! Keep those hands clean. Washing hands is the single most important thing we can do stop the spread of germs. Thank you for attending the flu clinic. We had a great turn out!!! If you missed it, please get your flu vaccine!!! Stay healthy this school year!
