Importance
Population is at a growing rate and seafood is a sustainable resource. Although some species of fish are being over fished, other species are not and are abundant. Seafood also has a large role in daily consumption by many countries. Americans consumed nearly 5 billion pounds in 2009.
Environmental Effects
- Over-fishing- The depletion of fish is an obvious factor, and solutions are being found.
- Habitat Destruction- Many fishing tactics can be harmful to reefs and ocean bottom.
- Lost Fishing Gear- This gear can sometimes continue to catch fish, wasting them.
- Bycatch- Catching fish that were not being targeted, sometimes getting them killed.
