Reflecting on the UOI
UOI 3: How the World Works
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central Idea: Scientists use research skills to study the atmosphere.
Lines of Inquiry
- · Properties of Air (Reflection)
- · Patterns in Weather (Causation)
- · Changes in the Sun and Moon (Change)
What are We Learning this Unit?
Math: In Math, students will learn about place value through addition and subtraction within 20. Find the links to the Parent Tip Sheets below.
Standards:
1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
1.OA.2 Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
1.OA.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. (Students need not use formal terms for these properties.) Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
1.OA.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8. Add and subtract within 20.3
1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use mental strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13). Understand place value.
1.NBT.2 Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Understand the following as special cases: a. 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones—called a “ten.” b. The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
Reading: In Reading, students will continue to work on their comprehension and word solving strategies. Students will read leveled books and complete activities that reinforce their targeted skills and strategies.
Standards:
1.RF.4a Read on-level text with purpose and understanding
1.RF.4b Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings
1.RF.4c Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary
1.RL.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text
1.RL.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson
1.RL.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details
1.RL.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events
Science/Social Studies: During this UOI, students will explore what it means to be a scientist by completing the steps of a science project. Students will keep a science journal of their observations.
Standards/Skills:
- Observe carefully in order to gather data.
- Use a variety of instrument and tools to measure data accurately.
- Use scientific vocabulary to explain their observations and experiences.
- Identify or generate a question or problem to be explored.
- Plan and carry out systematic investigations, manipulating variables as necessary.
- Make and test predictions.
- Interpret and evaluate data gathered in order to draw conclusions.
Field Trip to the Maryland Science Center's Planetarium, details TBA.
