Language Arts
This week, we will begin to focus on reading informational text and identifying the central or main idea of various historical articles and books. Traditionally, reading and gaining information from informational text is challenging for elementary - aged kids. Hopefully, throughout this school year, your child will become more comfortable with reading this type of text and will show more interest in reading the genre. Encourage your child to read about their favorite topics using online encyclopedias, newspaper and magazine articles, video game instructions, etc. to promote more excitement for reading the genre.
Affixes
Thanks to an amazing suggestion from a wonderful parent, I will now be attaching links for the flash cards. I hope this makes the process easier :-)
Social Studies
We began a new time period in social studies today! We are now exploring the Industrial Revolution and Immigration. Students will be responsible for understanding the following standards:
5-3.1 Explain how the Industrial Revolution was furthered by new inventions and technologies, including new methods of mass production and transportation and the invention of the light bulb, the telegraph, and the telephone.
5-3.3 Summarize the significance of large-scale immigration to America, including the countries from which the people came, the opportunities and resistance they faced when they arrived, and the cultural and economic contributions they made to the United States.
5-3.4 Summarize the impact of industrialization, urbanization, and the rise of big business, including the development of monopolies; long hours, low wages, and unsafe working conditions on men, women, and children laborers; and resulting reform movements.
WESTWARD EXPANSION RETEST:
If your child has opted to retest, this will happen Monday morning. We completed the retest form in class and worked on the first study assignment together.

All Box Tops are due by tomorrow, 10/18. The prize for the winning class will be a FROZEN YOGURT party! Please pack the box tops you've collected in your child's book bag today! By the way, there will be a box top contest every nine weeks, so please continue to clip them and send them to your child's homeroom teacher throughout the school year. Thanks!
