Cultural Highlights For The Week
Asian American and Pacific Islander Month
History of Philadelphia's Chinatown:
Philadelphia’s Chinatown was born in 1870 with a laundry at 913 Race Street, owned by Lee Fong, one of the many sojourners who fled anti-Chinese sentiment in the west and relocated east to form small “bachelor societies” in many cities. For many decades Chinatown consisted of a concentration of Chinese businesses clustered around the 900 block of Race Street. After World War II, liberalized immigration policies toward the Chinese transformed Chinatown into a family-oriented community. Churches, businesses, and social and cultural organizations were established to improve neighborhood life, preserve Chinese culture, and provide services to growing numbers of immigrants. At the same time, the neighborhood faced ongoing threats from urban renewal projects such as the Vine Street Expressway, which displaced residents and limited growth. Continued activism by community members has allowed the community to survive and today many look to the future of Chinatown in new housing and businesses north of Vine Street.

Virtual Enrichment Summer Opportunity- Registration is Open
To promote continuous learning over the summer, NPSD will be offering a summer enrichment opportunity for all elementary students who have completed grades K-6 in the 2022-2023 school year. This free virtual program is designed to be completed asynchronously, with the engagement of families. Our goal is to provide independent, engaging activities throughout the summer that are the perfect blend of academics and fun in order to best support continued growth for our students.
The program will offer four weeks of content starting on Monday July 3rd. New content will be posted every Monday. Registration will be required, and a link will be posted for families by May 15th to register their child. All information will also be posted to the NPSD website, and promoted through social media outlets. While the information is not posted yet, we want you to be able to promote it while sharing summer ideas and talking to your families. Please remember, this is different from SPARK, which is our in-person summer remediation program, and students must be invited to participate in that program.
Once the program begins, students will have access to four weeks of themed choice menus with activities that are aligned to grade level standards in ELA and Math, and will also incorporate movement, creativity, and more! Students will also have the opportunity to work through their personalized learning pathway on iReady for math and Freckle for ELA.

Smart Watch/ Cell Phone Reminder
We have seen a growing number of students using electronic devices and sending/receiving text messages throughout the day, which has disrupted the learning environment. Please note, cell phones should be in silent mode or turned off and stored in bookbags throughout the day. Smartwatches should not be used to make calls, send messages, or take photos/videos during the school day. Also, note the school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal electronic devices. Our school team will be reminding our students of these expectations regarding personal devices.
We thank all of our families for their continued support and cooperation in limiting disruptions to the classroom.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
