News From Panther Headquarters
October 2022
From The Desk Of The Principal
Hello Panther Parents/Guardians,
It’s been a busy month here at HIJH, but it’s been good. I hope you find the information in this month’s newsletter helpful, and I’d like to remind you of Fall Break that will take place October 17th- 21st. There will be no school on these days, so hopefully our students can use this time to relax and reset for the second half of the semester. We still need cafeteria workers and substitute teachers in our district, so please keep sending your referrals to Central Office. As always, if there is anything we can do to better serve your family, we are just a call away.
Thank you
Jagga Rent
Principal
Vision Screening
We will be doing vision screening for 5th and 8th grade as per state guidelines in the month of October. If you do not want your child screened- please let us know. Contact eallen@hse.k12.in.us or thollingsworth@hse.k12.in.us
As a reminder, if your student has a fever of 100.4 they need to stay home until they are fever free without medication for 24 hours.
If your student vomits- they need to stay home until they are vomit free without medication for 24 hours. This rule also applies to diarrhea.
Attendance Reminders
Attendance/Early Dismissals
Please call the attendance line, 317-594-4126, by 9:00am to report all attendance including early dismissals, all day absences, and late arrivals. This allows the staff adequate time to facilitate the requests. We will send your student a pass and have them waiting for you in the office at the time requested.
Additionally, and for planning purposes, our car rider line does seem to form quite early so dismissals after 3:30 may be difficult to maneuver.
If you do not call ahead……the parent/guardian will need to show identification to have the student dismissed. This is for the security of our students.
NOTE: Please be aware that it may take time to locate students who are at lunch, outside for P.E., Recess, etc. The more notice you can give the school, the smoother this process becomes. We appreciate your assistance!
Drop Off Area
Drop off area is located at the entrance of the building.
Please continue to drop off your students items on the drop off table in the main lobby. If you circle that you have texted your student, a note will not be delivered to them. Our student aids bring the items into the office for students to come and pick up.
Thank you for your cooperation as we continue to work on protecting our class time and safety.
Book Rental And IPAD Fees
Skyward is now updated with 22-23 book rental fees. The fees are due by Oct. 3, 2022 Fees can be paid on line through efunds,(be sure to click book rental fees), check or money order, please NO CASH. If paying by check please put your child’s ID number in the memo line. This will ensure the amount is applied to the correct student. Please allow up to 2 weeks for skyward to show paid. Receipts will not be sent home. Please remember there are no automatic free lunch or books. If you believe you should be free you will need to complete the free/reduced application through food service on the home web page.
If you have any questions please contact Doty Gaertner, Treasurer at 594-4120 ext. 5011 or dgaertner@hse.k12.in.us
Lunch Visitations
We know that many of our families have enjoyed the opportunity to eat lunch with their student(s). However, due to safety and space limitations in some of our schools, district administration has made the difficult decision to keep our student lunches closed to all outside guests at this time.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and encourage you to look for other opportunities to engage with your student(s), their class, and our schools. There are many ways to get involved!
If you have any questions or concerns, contact Jimmie Lake, Chief Operations Officer, at 317-594-4100 or jlake@hse.k12.in.us
Fundraiser Pick Up
Fundraiser order pickups will be Monday, October 10 from 4:15 pm – 6:15 pm
You will enter the athletic entrance door #3 to pick up your items. It is extremely important that you, or someone you designate, pickup your orders. We do not have the refrigerator storage to store items not picked up.
If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Blanchard at cdblanchard@hse.k12.in.us.

A Message from the Library:
Book Fair
Thank you for your support during our Fall Book Fair! And a special thank you to our PTO and all our parent volunteers who help tremendously with the running of our book fair! It was wonderful to see so many students excited about books and reading! The fair also helps support our library and generated a little over $5,000 worth of funds to be used for books and resources for HIJH library, students, and staff.
Young Hoosier Book Program
Each year the Young Hoosier Book Award committee selects 20 books in different age ranges to nominate for our state book award. Each year any student (or adult) who reads some of the YHBA books that year can vote and help decide which book and author get the state book award that year! HIJH Library has several of these titles and does different things throughout the year to support this program. They have lists for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Find the list of all titles here or by grade level and with annotations here.
