Severe Weather Procedures
We wanted to remind everyone of procedure for severe weather events and drills. You should have evacuation maps in your safety folder that show where you are to take your students during a severe weather event/drill. Our campus is unique with four independent buildings. During weather watches, PE can still be going on in both gyms. The only movement between buildings is for students to move to small groups or specials. We carry on with business as usual. During weather warnings, all movement is restricted to the building that you are in. PE classes move into the main buildings. It would be good for those classes to return to their homeroom classes. Restroom breaks and other errands should be kept to a minimum to ensure that we can easily and quickly account for students.
Once we receive notice that conditions are worsening (tornado sirens, weather radio, or message from school safety), you will move your students to your evacuation zone. Items such as books used to cover the students heads can become projectiles if wind enters the buildings. Students will sit shoulder to shoulder against a wall. There are two types of seating. One is with the students’ backs up against the wall, their knees pulled to their chest, and their head down. During drills, this is how the students will sit. Also, if we evacuate during a real event, students will sit like this until they get the order to “duck and cover.” At this point students will turn and face the wall, get on their knees, put the head towards the floor and cover the back of their head and neck. They will stay in this position until the all clear is given.
Each of the last few years we have had a severe weather event here at Sawnee. It is the teachers’ jobs to keeps students safe and calm. Some teachers have read books to their students while others have calmly reassured each student. It is important for the students to stay quiet and listen for your directions. Please account for your students and utilize your colored cards. There will be hallway sweepers to come around to check to ensure that all students are accounted for. Please only contact the office if there is an emergency. In a real weather emergency, office staff will be unavailable to answer the phones so utilize great patience and great judgement during these times.
