A Positive Spin
So far, we have discussed some mindfulness techniques that are simple, quick and, we hope, effective: box breathing, legs up the wall pose, body scan and progressive muscle relaxation. We hope you practice these techniques daily and look back at our Mindful Minute newsletters.
This is our last newsletter for the school year. We want to congratulate you all for managing during remote learning and figuring out how to be you during quarantine and school closure. Everyone has a different situation and experience. Congratulations to the graduating 8th graders. We are so proud of you, know you will do great things in high school and will miss you. To the 7th graders we are proud of you too, and we look forward to being with you next school year.
We want to leave you with an idea … we encourage you to find a positive spin on situations.
Author, Akiko Yabuki, wrote a book, “Ishi: Simple Tips from a Solid Friend”. Ishi means “rock” in Japanese, but it also means “wish” and “intention”. In the book, Ishi gives simple tips that put a positive spin on those moments when we are feeling down and out or when things just aren't going our way.
Activity: Make your own Ishi rock to remind yourself to be mindful, happy and kind.
Step 1. Find a rock.
Step 2: Give it a name.
Step 3: Make a face with a marker. Make a happy face on the rock to remind you that
you can always choose to be happy. You can make other faces on the other side of different rocks showing different emotions like nervous, excited, disappointed, afraid, lonely, scared , frustrated , anxious, confused, exhausted, empty, numb, proud, bored, etc. Just put a happy face on the other side of each rock to remind yourself that you can always choose to be happy.
Step 4: Put your rock(s) in a non-breakable bowl … with permission from your parent(s)
or guardian(s).
Happy Summer! Let's look for the positive spin :)
