Facts

History

The era of the steamboat began in America in 1787 when John Fitch(1743-1798) ran the first successful trial of a forty-five-foot steamboat down the Delaware River on August 22, 1787 in the presence of members from the Constitutional Congress. On February 1, 1788 the very first US patent was issued to Briggs & Longstreet. By the 1870's, railroads had begun to supplant steamboats as the major transporter of both people and goods.

Inventors

The first attempts at steamboat building were made by the Americans John Fitch and James Rumsey in the 1790's. In 1805 Oliver Evans took a steam engine, mounted it on wheels, and drove it through the streets of Philadelphia to the Schuylkill River, publicly proving, steam COULD be used to move large objects. In 1807 Robert Fulton's North River(also known as the Clermont) made its famous trip down the Hudson River, steaming from New York to Albany in 5 days, traveling against the current at 5 miles an hour. The first trip upriver trip was made by Shreve's Enterprise up the Mississippi from New Orleans to Pittsburgh. In 1817 a 25 day trip New Orleans to Louisville amazed the nation, 10 years later, that same trip was made in 8 days.
