A Message from Global Studies!

Global Studies Newsletter

For Global Studies, we had a wonderful time celebrating Chinese New Year and learning about traditional Chinese desserts. Students learned a popular Chinese New Year song and how to say “xin nian kuai le” (happy new year) and “gong xi gong xi” (congratulations!), which are common greetings during Chinese New Year. They also learned the history of different types of traditional Chinese desserts, and watched street artists perform sugar art such as sugar painting and blowing candy. Finally they tasted Haw Candy Flakes, a snack that is made of a Chinese fruit – the haws.

Some students loved it so much that they wanted to know where they could get it. So here is the information. You can find it in Asia Mart located at 6103 E 86th St, Indianapolis, IN 46250 (Castleton Mall area). (Adjacent to this message is a picture of the packaging.)

Next week students will start Global Studies in Spanish and I am super excited for them for this new language learning experience! Once again I am so grateful to have the opportunity to teach your child Chinese in the last 3 months. I hope they will continue their love in learning different languages and the world around them.

Please consider sending a snack to school with your child each day. Our approved list (to keep all of our Cardinals safe - especially those living with food allergies) include:

We appreciate donations for our students that are without a snack, as well. Thank you for considering!

Background Checks & Anti-Bullying Video

All who desire to volunteer, chaperone fieldtrips, or eat lunch in the cafeteria must have an approved background check on file and complete the Anti-bullying video. Thanks so much for your help with this! We will collect these items all year long!

We are Learning

The kids are STILL working hard on their nonfiction books. Most of the kids are still wrapping up their rough drafts and many have moved into their final drafts. They are doing such a great job and are applying the nonfiction features that they have learned to their writing. Some kids have chosen to use their nonfiction books and write their final drafts to use in there young author books! They are doing fabulous!

Word Study

Below are the sorts we will practice in class!! We will continue to study the words that were sent home on Monday of this week.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

Next week, we will wrap up our study of money! The kids have really done amazing with this! If your child brought in coins to school, I will send these coins home in the middle of next week. After our study of money, we will move on to geometry!

Social Studies

Second grade has been studying economics over the last weeks. We have deepened our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We will culminate our study of economics with a mini PBL where each child will build a store for our classroom community the will provide a good/service! They will then share about their creation with the class! This week we started brainstorming the business we would like to create and whether or not it provides a service/good!! The kids were then given a box, $6, markers, crayons, and glue. They used their money to buy items from the sweet supply shop. We will finish our project next week!
