Chartwell School Weekly News and Highlights
September 5th, 2019
A parent shared a very apt analogy this week: "A new school year is like soup, and all of the elements need time to cook." Well, we're cooking now! We are continuing to assess students, tweak schedules, adapt assignments, set up supportive technology, and listen to our students to ensure that Chartwell is serving them as best we can.

Chartwell Family Network (CFN)
Chartwell Family Network (CFN) Coffee - Tuesday, September 10th
Every family at Chartwell is a member of the Chartwell Family Network. Chartwell Family Network is a coalition of parents building community and supporting Chartwell to empower and bring academic and life success to students and families with learning and attention differences. Please join CFN for coffee on Tuesday, September 10th, at 8:30am to 9:30am. We are excited to meet our new parents and reconnect with returning families. Morning coffee will give us an opportunity to get to know each other and design ways to connect this school year. Last year we had a lot of fun at Family Movie Nights, a Parents Wine event, Mom’s Night Out, Mountain Biking, and we learned a lot from each other at Chartwell's educational workshops. Please come and help build our amazing community! As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Dawn at cfn@chartwell.org or 650-740-0717.

Social Emotional Academic Development (SEAD)
As we move into our SEAD (Social Emotional Academic Development) program, we have been talking to students about the systems we are using here at Chartwell. One of those systems is for teachers to note and share information about actions that are notable (well above or below our expectations). We call those actions that are above our expectations "Glows" and those that are below our expectations "Grows." We want to mention this as we suggest this is how you might frame conversations about your child's day. "What is one glow and one grow from today?" Many people use language like "highs and lows" or "roses and thorns," but trying to use consistent language can be most beneficial for your child.
Dogs on Campus
We have noticed an increase in dogs on our campus this year. Chartwell has always had a very clear policy on dogs on campus during the school day while children are present. Below is the section in our 2019 Family Handbook that clarifies our policy. We ask that you leave your furry friends at home or in your vehicle (preferably in the shade with the windows open a bit) when you come to Chartwell. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask.
Dog Policy
For student and staff safety, Chartwell School has a strict no dog policy. No dogs are allowed on campus at any time before, during or after school hours. Certified service animals and guide dogs are allowed, in accordance with state law. Certified therapy dogs and their handlers may be allowed in certain circumstances with approval by the Head of School. For recurring visits, guide dogs and service animals must have up-to-date vaccination records on file in the school office. A person with a disability may be accompanied by a service animal or guide dog while on Chartwell School property, unless the animal’s behavior:
➔ Creates a fundamental alteration in the nature of the educational setting
➔ Is not well behaved
➔ Presents a risk to the health and safety of students and/or staff

Structured Literacy
High School Updates
Google Classroom
Students are continuing their study of our theme, The Myth of the West. Most classes are up and running on Google Classroom, our digital learning platform. Students should check it regularly in order to track, review, and submit their assignments. Teachers post resources and work on Google Classroom regularly. Thus, if a student stays home sick, much of the school work remains accessible to them (as long as they have their laptop).
September 24-26 Field Experience
Our students follow our community standards extremely well when we travel together, and this excellent behavior is the reason we are able to take fun, educational, overnight trips. However, if a student breaks our standards during a field experience, we will call the family and require the student to be picked up at our location asap. Thank you for understanding this policy.
We will send home an itinerary and a packing list next week.
Advising for After High School
Our 9th and new 10th graders met today during advisory for a presentation and discussion about the many and varied post-high school options, how grades and GPAs work, what transcripts look like, and how they can make the most of their time in high school. Please ask them about these topics at home to continue the conversation.
