News in a Flash
Franklin Central High School: 2019-20, Issue #3, 8-12-19
Opportunities to get to know FC!
This week brings us Open House (Wednesday) and the Senior Parent Meeting (Thursday). We hope to see a great turn out for both events; the details for each are contained later on in this newsletter. I am constantly amazed by what our students and staff are able to accomplish in a day-- the step count alone is spectacular-- and this is your chance as parents to get just a small taste of what it takes to be a Flash.

BARK: Safety for School-Issued Accounts
Dear Parents,
Keeping students safer on their school-provided devices and accounts is of paramount importance to us. In that regard, we will continue to use Bark for Schools to monitor school-issued accounts. Bark for Schools is a powerful monitoring service utilized to help us better protect students both at school and at home.
When schools give students access to laptops and email accounts, an incredible world of learning opportunities open up — as well as potential dangers. Bark helps us monitor all of the content our students are creating, sharing, and sending through school-issued accounts. This helps us to detect potentially dangerous situations that students may be facing both in and out of school, including:
• Cyberbullying
• Threats of violence
• Predatory advances
• Sexual content
• Suicidal ideation
Bark’s technology is proven. In 2018, Bark detected 1.2 million instances of cyberbullying, 140,000+ communications discussing self-harm or suicidal ideation, nearly 100 student conversations with sexual predators, and 51 potential acts of violence in schools.
Currently, principals and counseling staff at each school monitor this activity and receive alerts for critical issues that arise.
If you have not already opted-in to the Family Alerts Dashboard, you will receive an email invitation to create an account for the Bark for Schools Family Alerts Dashboard. After school hours and during weekends, breaks, and holidays, you'll receive alerts if issues are detected on your child's accounts, such as in emails, documents, or browsing history.
If you have any questions, please contact the principal of the school that your child attends.
Sincerely,
Tyler Knight

Senior Information and Parent Meeting
We will also have a meeting on Thursday, August 15 before school at 7:00 am in the auditorium for parents who might have questions. If you are unable to make it, you can access the information on the FC website under Guidance Counseling (posted after the meeting) or through your senior's Naviance account.
We will be meeting with seniors who do not currently have government or econ on Friday, August 16 during CCR time.
It's going to be a great year.
Governor's Work Ethic Certificate
Beginning with the Class of 2020, our seniors will be able to earn a Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate if they demonstrate work ethic skills and meet other criteria. Earning this certificate is a way for students to demonstrate that they possess the employability and character skills needed to be successful as they enter post-secondary institutions, apprenticeships, the military, and/or the workforce: that they are at work/school on a regular basis and on time, able to work with others, able to solve problems, and are self-starters.
Students receiving the Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate will be measured in ten areas of academic and work ethic competency. Six subjective measures (Integrity, Motivation, Professionalism, Adaptability, Communication, and Teamwork) will be evaluated by teachers or other adults confirming that a student has met these requirements. Students must also complete 6 hours of community service, have a GPA of 2.0 or higher, meet all graduation requirements, have an attendance rate of 98%, and have one or fewer discipline referrals for the year.
Please encourage your senior to participate in this program. Seniors are receiving information about the Work Ethic Certificate program from their Guidance Counselor this week and have until Friday, August 30 to opt in to the program. If you have any questions or would like more information about the program, please contact Mrs. McCabe at amy.mccabe@ftcsc.org.

Parking Permits
Parking permits are now available. The cost of the permit is $10 and available to any Junior or Senior with a minimum 2.0 GPA. No Sophomores will be granted a permit.
Please have your student bring the completed parking permit application, their drivers license, and $10 to Mrs. Ruley in high school main office.
Parking permit applications are available in the high school main office or can be printed off from the following link Student Parking Application or from the high school website.
Please note that parking permits will only be sold before and after school.
Central Nine
It is mandatory for all Franklin Central students who attend C9 to ride the bus to and from the C9 campus every day. Students are not permitted to drive to or from C9 under any circumstances. If a student misses the shuttle, he/she will report to FCHS Media Center to avoid an unexcused absence. Failure to follow this policy will result in suspension from school, driver’s parking permit revoked, and/or removal from C9.
Students driving to the high school need to obtain a parking pass. Forms are available in the main office of the high school. The cost for a parking pass is $10.
- Students who will be riding a bus to the high school will be placed on a middle school route. It is imperative that you check the time and place of the middle school route pickup as high school routes will not arrive in time to make the C9 shuttle. Bus Route Information is linked from the FCHS homepage.
Friday Bus Service will return August 16th

Clinic News
For those students with chronic health conditions, there are action plans located on the district’s website: https://ftcsc.org
Go to tab towards top of page “About”
Click on Health Services
Click on Health Services forms which is on the right.
Located here are consent to treat forms, health forms, and permission forms for medications.
There is a self-carry medication form for inhalers and epi-pens that the physician must complete.
Lastly, there are action plans for asthma, seizures, life-threatening food allergies, other allergies, and diabetes..
If your student has an appointment over the summer, please take with you to have the physician complete for the upcoming school year.
COMMUNITY HEALTH CONSENTS
These documents must be updated each school year. They are provided electronically as a part of the online registration process for both existing students and new enrollments and should be completed prior to the start of the school year. Students must have a consent to treat signed by a parent or guardian to be seen in the school nurse clinic. All students will be treated in the case of an emergency.
ATTENTION parents of senior students for upcoming 2019-2020 School Year:
Students entering the 12th grade are required to have an additional dose of the Meningococcal immunization-to equal two doses-prior to the start of school.
Seniors are also required to have 2 doses of Hepatitis A.
It is recommended that Seniors have 2 doses of Meningitis B and HPV as well-please discuss these with your healthcare provider. Please contact your student’s doctor as soon as possible so that your student’s immunizations are up to date prior to the start of school. The availability of appointments diminishes greatly as the school year approaches. The Marion County Health Department’s phone number is 317-221-5700, and offers appointments throughout the week. Other resources include Community Med Check locations and Community Clinic at Walgreens. If you do not have a primary physician, or need assistance in finding one, please contact your school nurse for resources.
