National Joe Day
Good morning, friends. Today is National Joe Day. Yep, it's a thing. This day encourages adult friends to enjoy a cup of joe, or coffee, with all their friends named Joe, Jo, Joey, Joseph, and Josephine. While you’re at it, don’t forget Joette, Jody, Johanna, Jodie or any other version of the name Joe. In case you didn't know it, quite a few nicknames can be created from this one name.
Records indicate that 448,065 boys in the United States have been named Joe since 1880.
The greatest number of people were given this name in 1936, when 8,021 people in the U.S. were given the name Joe. Those people are now 84 years old.
One way to celebrate the day is by telling familiar stories about friends and family named Joe. We all know someone from our past or present who have made our lives just a little bit better just by being the Joe or Jo that they are. I will share a photo story of my Joe. You might recall that our son, Joseph, is pretty much stranded here in the United States, as his new home country of Germany is not allowing people to come in from other countries due to COVID-19. You know what they say, "Every cloud has a silver lining." Hey, that's an idiom! What does that really mean, anyway? That's right: There is good to be had from otherwise unpleasant situations. It was terribly sad to lose my mother, but this unexpected gift of having Joseph home with us is a real "silver lining." Be sure to check out the sweet, sweet military homecoming between my Scruffy and my Joe in the photo below.
Task #1
Find the antonyms for the following words in the text.
father, wrong, above, unfamiliar, remember, least, old, and fake
Task #2
The text said that in 1936 8,021 were named Joe. If 8,360 people were born with that name the following year, then how many more people were named Joe in 1937 than in 1936? Write an inverse sentence to check your work.
