Newsletter #2 How the World Works
UOI 3: How the World Works
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central idea: We can use force to help things move.
Key concepts: Function, Connection, Causation
Related concepts: similarities, differences, roles, behavior, systems
Lines of inquiry
- Pushes and pulls as forces (Function)
- Gravity as a force (Connection)
- How forces effect movement (Causation)
UOI Field Trip: Maryland Science Center 02/01/18
Students are super excited about this upcoming trip!
What Have We Been Learning?
Using paper clips to measure
I wonder how long this book is?
Interactive SMART Board
Math
MODULE: 3 Measurement and Data
- With the weather delays and cold/flu epidemic our progress with this unit on measurement and data has just taken off with students learning to use a ruler and count inches!
- With partners students measured various objects around the room. As a class we gathered some of the objects and graphed the length of each to determine compare lengths.
- Using paper clips, counters, teddy bears and string, students measured the length of objects as well as their friends.
- Comparing "taller" and "shorter" students competed to see who could build the tallest cup tower
- Students played "Number Hop" to identify numbers as "greater than" and "less than" and use math vocabulary as "one more"or "one less"
- Students practiced reading graphs to answer the question "How Many?"
- Using the class SMART Board students have engaged with interactive activities to reinforce math thinking and reasoning skills
- Students continue to build on counting and matching strategies with numbers and various pictures and objects to show understanding of numbers, groups and review base ten math strategies. EX: How many tens and ones are there in 12? One group of ten and 2 ones equals 12
NOTE:
With the many days off this new year, students have required extra support with their counting and matching strategies. I highly recommend students practice base ten counting, number recognition, order and counting both "up the stairs" (ascending order) and "down the stairs" (descending order) for numbers 1-10 and challenge for 11-20. As we progress to addition and subtraction these foundational skills will be important to have mastered.
Once again, I recommend abcya.com for reinforcement and review as it has games and activities for all these concrete math skills.

ENGLISH
Trying to keep ahead of the cold/flu season as well as the snow and ice days, students have been working on a variety of reading, writing. listening and speaking skills since the beginning of the New Year 2018!
Reading:
- Practiced retelling the story, "The Gingerbread Man" to order what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.
- After listening to "The Twelve Days of Winter" students created a snow globe by following sequential steps to complete and show details of a "winter day"
- In small groups students practiced navigating their kidsa-z activities and leveled readers
- Students are assigned into reading groups to reinforce and practice their goals for reading. All reading levels are commented on in MB under classwork entitled reading groups.
- Students continue to build fluency with sight and frequency word recognition.
- Working on consonant blends, digraphs and long vowel words with spelling and "bossy e" rule.
Consonant blends (also called consonant clusters) are groups of two or three consonants in words that makes a distinct consonant sound, such as "bl" or "spl." Consonant digraphs include bl, br, ch, ck, cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, gl, gr, pl, pr, qu, sc, sh, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, th, tr, tw, wh.
WRITING:
- Returning from Winter Break, students illustrated what they did during the break with a written description of their drawing. (uploaded to See Saw portfolio)
- Used sight words to write and illustrate sentences showing understanding for the writing elements: Capitalization, finger space and punctuation.
- Continue to practice reinforcing handwriting skills using a variety of fine motor building activities (cutting, pasting and shaping with play dough)
NOTE:
Please remember to read at least 10 minutes each night with your child. Reading activities can include kidsa-z, sight words, looking for words or letter sounds in stories or magazines, reading signs around the neighborhood, playing a letter/sound matching game, engaging on abcya.com activities or any other educational online tool. The key and goal is to build a love for reading while engaging in activities that are fun and supportive for each learner.
AQI
During this UOI, Students have focused on learning about:
Arabic
The human body parts such as arms, legs, hands, feet, ect. Students also learned the vocabulary regarding facial features. Students also continued working on their Arabic Alphabet. Students are also continuing their practice of their handwriting skills.
Quran
Students have started their memorization of their new Surahs. Because of multiple students being absent due to being sick or absent, we will continue on with the current memorization into the UOI. Consistency is key to Quran memorization.
Islamic Studies
Students have extended their knowledge about the responsibility of their body parts by understanding that they will speak for you on the Last Day. Students have also continued learning their Daily Duas ( supplication).
Standards
1.) I can identify body parts.
2.) I can write in a legible manner.
3.) I can recite Surah Takathur
4.) I can explain the meaning of Surah Takathur
5.) I can identify sukoon
Science
Science: Materials and Motion:
- Students have investigated many different objects to learn what "force" helps it move. They created a VENN Diagram in class to show how objects can move when a force is applied to it. As we explored the forces of push and pull, students sorted objects into either a push, pull or both category. Sorting was relatively easy, their challenge was to explain how and why the force worked.
- Mr. Isaac Newton and Galileo were introduced through stories and the famous "apple falling from the tree" scenario! Using plastic apples we practiced this fact while learning about gravity!
- Students have been exploring their UOI vocabulary words force, push, pull, gravity, collide, speed, motion, fast, slow, and direction through literacy and educational websites, (MB)
- Students will continue to investigate gravity to pull balls down slopes and investigate what happens when things collide.
- Students will change the strength of a push on a balloon rocket flying on a line to explore cause and effect. This is our UOI Summative
ART
Tessellation of patterns
They dipped the base of the paper roll on paint and applied it on the paper to create a circle and then they repeated this step until they created a repetition of this pattern, they used the space either by aligning the circles horizontally and vertically or by creatively choosing a different composition. Finally they used brushes to paint the negative spaces.
Patterns and repetition
Radial symmetry
They created an eight fold radial symmetry artwork using oil pastels. They finally created a composition of all their work on the floor and observed the balance, repetition and connection between the artworks.
