Trauma Informed Practices

On Friday, September 16th, Dr. Alton Hart presented to members of the Student Success Team about the importance of Trauma Informed Practices. On Monday, September 19th, I attended a conference in Washington, DC entitled Trauma Informed Approaches in School: Supporting Girls of Color and Rethinking Discipline with leadership from the VDOE, Richmond Public Schools, and Norfolk Public Schools. The lessons from that conference will do much to guide our work here in Petersburg, and across the Commonwealth.

Visit the following links for information and resources on Trauma Informed Practices:

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and Trauma Informed Practices (TIPs)

Even though Mr. Baraka is the interim principal at Peabody MS, he is continuing in his role as PBIS Coordinator for the division. Ms. Alex Javna will be working with Mr. Baraka as Co-Coordinator. Our goal is to seamlessly connect Trauma Informed Practices with the work we are doing with PBIS.

The VDOE is supporting our implementation of PBIS divisionwide, and has provided financial resources to fund professional development. We will have support from Dr. Rick Bowmaster, and hope to use some of the funds to support Trauma Informed Practices PD, as well.

Please stay tuned for more information!

Supporting Our Students, and the Adults Who Serve Them

As the Department of Student Success, we work seamlessly behind the scenes to ensure that all students (and the adults who serve them) have the support they need to be successful. Make sure you are communicating with and visiting schools daily (or weekly, depending on your role) to ensure that you are tapped into what is happening at each campus. We cannot provide the necessary supports unless we know what is needed.

Dr. Blount publishes a weekly newsletter for school based administrators. Please check the weekly updates to keep abreast of the weekly expectations for each school.
