FRIDAY, MARCH 11th: EARLY RELEASE DAY and SPORTS SPIRIT DAY!! 11:30 parent pick up/12:00 Bus Departure

THIRD GRADERS HELPING THE CHILDREN OF THE UKRAINE

It all started with a few children in Mrs Kramer's third grade class telling the teacher that they want to help the children of the Ukraine. The class decided to do a fundraiser and send the proceeds to the United Way. As part of this project, the children have crafted a bake sale, a read-a-thon, and a bottle drive. Several students throughout the school have expressed an interest in taking part in this project.

NOTE: We are NOT teaching students about the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine. We are not sharing images, articles, details, or opinions. Some children are seeing scary media images at home and are hearing that children are fearful and fleeing for safety. Children relate to other children and bring up their concerns at school. At Somerset Elementary, we DO teach children to care about other people and work together to support each other. Your children are generous and caring, and they want to help. People of any age feel more hopeful and less stressed when they feel like they can do something to help. This is why we are allowing the students to fundraise and make a donation to an international aid group

On TUESDAY, MARCH 15th, students and staff are invited to dress in BLUE, YELLOW, and/or SUNFLOWERS.

If you would like to donate your recyclable bottles, please drop them off at the school by Tuesday, March 15th

If you would like to donate to the read-a-thon, please send cash or a check made payable to "Somerset Elementary" by Tuesday, March 15th.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES "IN PERSON"

Somerset Elementary is now able to invite families into the building. We are starting with Student Led Conferences in order to give children the opportunity to share both their work and classrooms with their families.

Kindergarten will be holding conferences on the afternoons/evenings of Tuesday, March 15th and Tuesday, March 22nd. Please make an appointment with your teacher.

First through Fourth Grade conferences are on the afternoons/evenings of Thursday, April 7th and Tuesday, April 12th. Teachers will be sending home appointment forms to assist in scheduling a time.

If you prefer to have a phone conference or a video meeting, please just let the teacher know. We are happy to continue to offer options that work for family schedules and preferences.

After two years of closed doors, we are very excited about welcoming the community back into our school for this event.

BIKES FOR BOOKS

The Corinthian Masonic Lodge, in cooperation with Somerset Elementary School, is sponsoring a program to encourage students in Kindergarten through Fourth grade to read.

Bikes for Books is very simple. Each student is asked to read as many books as they can between now and April 14th. For each book the student reads they get an entry form to fill out. The more books they read, the more entry forms they can put into the bike drawing. On Thursday, April 14th, the members of the Lodge will come to an assembly with several new bikes and helmets for each grade level. Last year we gave out 30 bikes!! The entry forms will be used to draw the winners.

We are very excited, and thankful, to bring this program back to the school again this year. The students really enjoy it, and it is a super way to promote reading which is one of the most important things we can do for our children. Every teacher in the school believes that reading can lead to a lifetime of achievements. This program is a mutual commitment between Lodge, the students, the teachers, and the parents working together.

Thank you for your consideration and support of this program that will help all of the children succeed.
