Braemar Mission Statement
It's amazing how time flies! We are quickly approaching the end of the first term. Students are beginning to think about a learning goal(s) in preparation of upcoming Student Teacher Family Conferences with their classroom teacher(s).
If you have yet to sign up for a conference time, kindly contact your child's classroom teacher this week. Please ensure that you sign up for a conference as your participation with your child is a valuable opportunity to meet with your child's classroom teacher(s) and celebrate your child's strengths, progress and learning goal(s).
Please remember that conference dates are as follows: November 16, November 17, November 21 and November 22. Dismissal time for all dates is 2 pm. Your child needs to be present at the conference with you.
If you are attending the conferences in person, please be sure to take a look at the Lost and Found display that will be set up in the mezzanine on the second floor.
Until the next bulletin!

Braemar School Action Plan Update
During the course of last spring to date, Braemar staff has thoroughly reviewed the current School Action Plan. At this time, the staff is in the process of considering three new goals which focus on: Cognitive Learning, Social Emotional Learning and Action-oriented learning. During the next few months, a school based working committee will provide direction with these focus areas. In collaboration with the staff, new goals and objectives will be established.
The September and October Staff Collabortion Day focussed on Social Emotional Learning and strategies to support trauma informed practices. The upcoming School Based Professional Day will focus on Cognitive Learning with a focus on writing instruction for students in kindergarten to grade 7.
On October 26th, the school based working group collaborated with parent representatives at the School District office. During the meeting, the Braemar team took time to review the school plan and reflect on further goals and objectives. We plan to meet again in January. We also intend to invite grade 6 & 7 student representatives to share their ideas and reflections pertaining to the school plan. Lots of good work ahead!
Many thanks to Lisa Evans, Kara Lavers and Amy Lynn Taylor, Braemar parent volunteers who have generously offered their time and their valuable input to this endeavour.
If you wish to join the school's planning committee, please contact Mrs. Singh at ssingh@sd44.ca

Message from Giving Tree 2022 Organizers
2022 Braemar Giving Tree
Welcome to the seventh Braemar Giving Tree. This is a Braemar Cares Initiative, which aims to bring together Braemar families in the spirit of giving, and to help families and students in the North Vancouver School District who require a little bit of support or cheer during this holiday season. This year we are working in collaboration with four other North Vancouver elementary and high schools.
The recipients of gifts in previous years have highlighted the emotional impact and financial relief that these gifts have provided. We receive many notes of gratitude that share how knowing somebody cares makes a difference to their lives during what is otherwise a difficult time.
This year’s Giving Tree will be like last year’s. With your help we would like to provide gift cards that can be used for groceries, clothing, toiletries, or other wishes.
If you would like to participate in this year’s Giving Tree please email us at braemargivingtree@gmail.com . We will then send you an email with a gift number (e.g. GT07), some basic information about the family or student and their specific gift card wish. These gift cards are to be delivered to us outside the school front door on either November 28th 29th and 30th, between 8.30-9.00 am and 3.00-3.30 pm.
Please register for participation by November 18th.
If you have any questions, please contact us at braemargivingtree@gmail.com
.
Thank you,
Sarah, Cathryn, and Natalie
Braemar Cares: Soap For Hope
Braemar Cares Initiative
Braemar is proud to be supporting the Family Services of the North Shore Christmas Bureau again this year. The Christmas Bureau supports families and individuals in need from Deep Cove all the way to Squamish. We are excited to be starting early by collecting personal hygiene items for their Soap for Hope program. Soap for Hope provides personal hygiene gift bags to all the Christmas Bureau families. You may remember that we participated in a similar initiative in October 2021. The Family Services of the North Shore Bureau has been open for an extended period as there has been an increased need this year due to impacts of COVID-19. We are encouraging the Braemar community to donate again. Please see attached PDF flyer at the bottom of the bulletin for more details.
Thank you in advance for supporting this cause!

Routine Reminders
As we enter into “flu season” please continue to assess your child’s wellness each morning, and keep children home when ill. We greatly appreciate everyone's attention and cooperation.
École Braemar Winter Traffic Plan
As we are a triple-track school, we attract significant auto traffic to the school. In the event of a major snow event, the movement of that traffic can become severely hampered. It is likely that:
- There will only be a single lane plowed along major feeder routes to the school such as Mahon and Evergreen;
- Cul-de sacs will likely not be plowed;
- Parking will be almost non-existent along feeder routes; and
- There will be a high degree of anxiety and frustration on the part of drivers when regular driver patterns and access routes are compromised by significant accumulations of snow.
Our local municipalities have established snow removal and clearing priorities. The clearing of access roads to schools is a second level priority, following arterial roads and bus routes. For more information about municipal snow clearing, please use the following link:
District of North Vancouver – Snow and Ice Removal
http://www.dnv.org/programs-and-services/snow-removal
Our Facilities Department has worked with our snow removal contractors (parking lots) to develop 'snow dump zones' at each school site. Each of the Municipalities of North Vancouver has provided useful information on their respective websites to assist our community to prepare for and manage conditions related to snow and ice.
Parents/guardians are responsible for their children’s safe travel to and from school. If for any reason there is concern that a child cannot travel safely, other arrangements should be made. Parents are also encouraged to establish an emergency plan for their children in the event that schools are closed, start late, or dismiss early. Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately to get to and from school. Your cooperation will be much appreciated!
In the meantime, please consider the following:
In the event of heavy snowfall, Mahon cul-de-sac will remain closed to traffic.
To further facilitate the smooth flow of traffic during excessive snow falls, ALL parents who drive their children to Mountainside Secondary, André Piolat, or Braemar are asked to drive north along Mahon Ave and to exit west along Evergreen to Delbrook Ave. This one way flow of traffic is suggested in our respective ‘School Snow Plans’ as a strategy to help minimize congestion and keep the streets safer for our students.
Any Braemar parents needing to park their vehicles should do so well away from the school.
Once at school, every effort will be made to clear pathways to three main entrances to the school. Students should use either:
The southeast door (entrance off of primary playground)
The main front door to the school
The door leading from the undercover play area
Please note that the other entrances will be opened, but access to it may not be shoveled.
If you wish to volunteer and assist in snow removal on the school property, please contact Sandra Singh - ssingh@sd44.ca
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
Support Student Learning at Home and School
This month, Braemar is focusing on helping students develop skills for learning. In our morning announcements we’ll be reminding students to develop listening skills, learn to focus attention, use self-talk, and be assertive. In addition, we’ll be reminding students of one of our school rules.
· Care and respect for learning
In every classroom, we’ll begin teaching about what it means to develop skills for learning.
How to Support at Home:
We encourage you to continue this learning at home and support your child by modelling, practising and praising your child when they are listening and focusing their attention.
Listening - Reinforce the importance of maintaining eye contact when you are listening to someone. We can learn a great deal from someone’s facial expressions as they talk. Good listening also involves using your ears and keeping our voices quiet. Encourage your child to slow down and really focus their attention when listening to others. Support your child to develop listening skills both with family and with friends.
Focusing Attention - Reinforce the idea that being able to focus your attention is an important skill for school and life. When we focus our attention, we use our ears, our eyes, and our brain. When we focus our attention, we are paying attention and thinking carefully about what someone is saying. Others appreciate it when we focus our attention on conversations. Praise your child when they focus their attention on a conversation and tell them how it makes you feel as a listener.
