This website is full of lessons that explore the math behind real-world topics, from sports to shopping to the odds of finding life on other planets. These lessons put teachers and students in a position to have interesting conversations that foster a classroom culture of curiosity and rigorous mathematical thinking.Grades 4-12
Yummy Math
Is the Double Stuff actually double the stuff in Oreo cookies? How much is a tweet worth? Is a never ending pasta pass a good idea? Yummy Math has timely and relevant math investigations that are correlated to Common Core and bring real life into math lessons. A membership is not necessary but for a small fee you can have access to editable documents. Grades 3-12
Pixar in a Box
This is a collaboration between Pixar Animation Studios and Khan Academy. Lessons range from grade 4 through high school but can also be used for younger advanced math students. Scroll down to the bottom of this newsletter to watch a quick video overview.
Robert Kaplinsky- Real World Math
Get the Math
Get the Math combines video and web interactivity to help middle and high school students develop algebraic thinking skills for solving real-world problems. Drawing on conventions of popular reality TV shows, video segments begin with profiles of young professionals, who then pose challenges connected to their jobs to two teams of teens. Viewers are encouraged to try the challenges themselves using interactive tools provided on the Get the Math website before returning to the video to see the teams’ solutions.
