The Good News
October 15 - St. John XXIII Catholic School
A message from Mr. Michael Hauptman - The Superintendent
As a school division we are committed to providing safe and caring environments.
Recent events have heightened the call for security at our schools and we want to ensure that one solution or another does not create other issues that jeopardize reasonable safety precautions and procedures.
In order to monitor access to our school once students have arrived for the start of the day, all schools in EICS will have cameras that allow staff in the office to see who is coming into our schools and stop them if they are not checking in at the office.
It is an expectation that all visitors, external staff, community partners and students (arriving after normal bell time) check into the office upon arrival.
Managing risk is part of providing safety. To that end our staff and schools are trained in Violence Threat Risk Assessment and follow procedures necessary for lock downs, hold and secure, and other procedures as necessary if any risk may arise.
Access to a safe space in our school is also critical and having a student stranded outside for a variety of reasons because ALL doors are locked would be a greater risk and more likely scenario/occurrence than an intruder trying to enter our school to do harm. Additionally, a locked door to prevent an individual intent on causing harm from entering our schools is not a guarantee of non-entrance.
To this end, all outside doors are locked during the operation of the school day except the front door that allows access to not only the community but for students who arrive during the day after appointments and other activities that take them away during normal school hours. The one exception is recess where an alternative door facing the main play area must also be unlocked for emergency access.

We are excited to announce that homework help in reading and math will be available for our English Language Learners on Tuesdays after school from 3:30-4:15 p.m. Our first session will be on Tuesday, November 7th and we will run every following Tuesday that lands on a school day. Sessions for November will therefore be November 7, 21, and 28. Please send Mrs. Weller an email at sandyw@eics.ab.ca if you are interested in having your child attend.
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise
St. John XXIII is very excited to offer to our parent community the opportunity to participate in the KAIROS Blanket Exercise on Thursday, November 23 at 7 p.m. in our school library. The Blanket Exercise is a teaching tool that shares the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. The experience is incredibly impactful and brings much understanding and empathy for the history of our Indigenous People and our role in positively moving forward towards reconciliation. Participating in such an activity can also be very impactful in supporting our children’s learning of this very important topic. If you are interested in attending, please let Mrs. Weller know by sending her an email at sandyw@eics.ab.ca
Our school staff will have the same opportunity to participate in the KAIROS blanket exercise on November 10. Both sessions are supported through funding from the Alberta Culture Celebration 150 and much thanks for helping us to arrange these sessions goes out to Mrs. Lana Santana.
