Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
December 20, 2019
Bring on 2020!
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying winter break with family and friends. I decided to hold off writing and sending it until closer to end of break because I know how hectic things are leading up to break.
Thank you so much to the following parents for planning and helping out with the winter party:
- Melanie Urban
- Mark Urban
- Lisa Johnson
- Kristina Ehlers
- Valerie Tully
- Kristin Bunnell
Poor Melanie worked hard planning the party, but was unable to attend due to a recent surgery. We had so much fun and everything ran very smoothly! Be sure to check out the pictures by clicking on the PADLET link below. I have posted the URL for them there!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the wreath full of wonderful gift cards for my gift. I appreciate all of you who so generously gave your hard-earned money so I could have a nice gift. I was overwhelmed with your generosity!
Second semester brings lots of changes in 3rd grade. Here are a few of them:
- We will begin studying Science since we finished the Social Studies curriculum.
- We will begin a SSL (Self-Selected Learning) project. This is similar to Google Genius Hour where students select a topic of interest, create a list of questions about the topic, and spend time researching, practicing, and learning all they can about it.
- IRead test for all 3rd graders happens the week of March 16. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments in the morning this week.
- New expectation for homework: Nightly typing.com practice - 10 minutes. It is the hope that your child is reading each night and completing math homelink/practicing math facts. The extra 10 minute typing homework is in preparation for the iRead test given in April. Students are expected to take the test on the computer and there is a writing response and essay part of the assessment.
- ILearn test for 3rd, 4th, 5th graders will begin April 20. Again, if you could avoid scheduling appointments in the morning this week, it would be very helpful.
Report cards for quarter two will be emailed to you on Friday, January 10. Once you view your child's progress, feel free to email me if you'd like to schedule a meeting. I try to paint a very accurate portrait of your child's progress, but questions may arise. I am happy to discuss!
That's all I have for now...
Happy New Year!

January 6 - 10
Reading:
- We will finish our Biography Unit during the first week back from break. Students will finish reading their book and write a short piece describing their learning.
Math: Unit 4 - Operations
- Fractions will be our focus for the next week in Math. Be sure to check your child's Assignment Notebook each night to see what math homework has been assigned. It is very important that your child is studying math facts for a minimum of 5 minutes each night. It makes a huge difference in his/her ability to progress through more challenging concepts that we will learn second semester. Your child has blue flash cards, xtramath.com, and Canvas resources to use to help master math facts.
Writing: Persuasive - Opinion
We will focus on the genre of writing a persuasive/opinion piece for the next quarter. Your child will learn to write a bold thesis statement and give evidence/reasons to support the thesis. We will write a rough draft, then publish the final piece using Google Docs.
Word Study - Grammar
- Spelling words with ou-ow
- Nouns: common/proper, singular/plural, possessive
Science: Scientific Method
Students will learn the steps to The Scientific Method. We will also begin some fun experiments that will apply the steps of The Scientific Method. Don't be surprised if your child comes home from school wanting to perform science experiments once we begin!
