Founded in 1664 by English colonists. Religion included Quakers, Lutherans, Jews, and Catholics.The original name was The Province of New Jersey.

A Tale of Two Jerseys

From 1664 through 1702 the New Jersey colony was divided into East Jersey and West Jersey.

Raw Materials

Timber, furs, coal, and iron ( one of the most important resources )


Industries included cattle, grain, rice, indigo, and wheat.

The Economy

An average farm was 50 to 150 acres. New Jersey was often referred to as one of the breadbasket colonies.
