What We are Learning

Reading: We are focusing identifying the main idea of a multi-paragraph text. We are also focusing on our RAPS strategy (Restate, Answer, Prove it, and Summarize) as we practice written comprehension.

  • RI.2.2 - Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

Writing: We are working on an opinion writing unit. Students are learning how to state an opinion and back it up with reasons that support their claim. We are currently writing about our favorite foods.

  • W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use

linking words (e.g.,because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Fundations: We will continue Unit 9 on Monday. We are focusing on r-controlled vowels. Please see your child's homework folder for more information.

  • RF.2.3 Know and apply grade -level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding.

  • RF.2.3. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.

  • RF.2.3. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one syllable words.

Math: We will continue our geometry unit on Monday. We are focusing on regular and irregular polygons: triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons.

  • 2.G.A.1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles, or given number of equal faces.

Science: We will begin Dr. Bob's Sound School next week. Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool (DBSS), the hallmark educational project of the Bob Moog Foundation, is an innovative, experiential 10-week curriculum that teaches second-grade students the physics of sound using both acoustic and electronic musical instruments including the theremin, and technological tools, like oscilloscopes. The information taught through the musical instruments is supplemented by custom educational materials developed by the BMF educational team. Please follow this link to learn more about DBSS. We will perform at the Orange Peel on April 14th along with all of the other ACS elementary schools. We would love for you to join us. There will be more information to come.

  • 2.P.1 Understand the relationship between sound and vibrating objects.

Social Studies: Students will learn about different cultures within our community.

  • 2.C.1 Understand how various cultures influence communities.

I LOVED my birthday surprise! Thank you Amanda, Regina, and the Trail Blazers for making this a very memorable birthday!
