English Update
In English class, students in both English 8 and Honors English are working through a poetry unit. Students are identifying examples of simile, metaphor, alliteration, rhyme scheme, personification, imagery, and many other sound devices and figurative language usages. English 8 students will get the opportunity to create their own poems!
After we finish poetry, we will move into our next novel units. English 8 will read The Outsiders by SE Hinton. This book is always a student favorite and a fun unit - complete with a dress up day and a game show over 1950s slang! Honors will fit in both The Outsiders and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.
We are gearing up to take the Indiana ILEARN assessment soon - English will test on April 19 and April 20. To help your child prepare for ILEARN, feel free to ask them about the three different kinds of essays, and strategies for writing each type.
8th Grade Science and Biology are pure Madness!
Biology is working within the Melanin Unit. Students are currently trying to determine mutations of the genetic disorder albinism. Students will need to work hard to understand the process of replication, transcription, and translation in order to complete our various labs and activities. In the future we will look at our Disease Module, which should continue an emphasis on the cell cycle. The big day for Biology is Tuesday, May 10th where we will take the BIO I-LEARN. April is super important, so be engaged in the content.
Most importantly, March Mammal Madness has reached the final four. It looks like Mr. Tuzinski is in the lead, so a bit of beginners luck there! Like a 100,000 heard of reindeer would be scared by a million bats.
Let's Get to Calculating with Miss Pleasant
Purdue Math8 is calculating our chances this next week as we move into our Probability Unit. We just finished Inequalities, with our test on Wednesday, March 30th. We will push forward with some fun activities over Probability and taking our chances! After the Probability test next Friday, April 8th, we will be moving into Exponents!
Purdue Algebra 1 Advanced Honors is finishing up our Chapter 6/Chapter 7 unit from before Spring Break! We will test over this Unit next Thursday, April 7th. After we finish this section, we will be moving into Chapters 11 and 12, with a splash of Graphing Quadratics!
The Stars at Night are Big and Bright!
This week students in US History learned more about the Alamo. First students pretended to be
a newspaper writer in 1836. The students were asked to write an article about the Alamo giving
facts about what happened and mentioning people who were involved in the Alamo. This let
students not only practice what they learned about the Alamo but also work on their writing
skills. On Thursday students had to make their own fort to see if they could design a fort that
could last a 13 day siege. Students had to make sure they included all of the necessary
components inside of the fort while making sure they could set up cannons to protect the fort's
walls. Students seemed to enjoy this activity and came up with many creative designs.
Remember there is no basement in the Alamo!
