Fall Forward

While Labor Day is our "unofficial" beginning of fall, in the world of science and seasons, the autumnal equinox, is the "official" first day of fall. What is the autumnal equinox you might be asking yourself? It is one of two moments in the year when the sun is exactly above the equator and day and night are of equal length. In the northern hemisphere this will occur at 6:30 am on Tuesday, September 22nd.

Fall can also be a natural time of reflection. Because the day and night are of equal length, research of folklore reveals that fall has been considered a time of of "oneness" perhaps a time to find balance and take ownership for our chosen direction in life. Here are some of my personal associations when I think about fall: harvest, family, feasts, home cooked meals (yum yum) merriment, traditions, values, beliefs, and most of all togetherness.

I find that there are times in the year where we almost instinctively set goals and look ahead. Collectively, we perform this rite at the New Year and then many again for their individual birthdays, and anniversaries. What if we included fall as another one of those times of introspection? We are each processing the events happening in our world, nation, communities, and homes. When these times have passed and we are on the other side of them, who do we want to be as a result of them? Who do we want our children to be? What type of community do we want to be?

Daylight savings is another fall event where time shifts one hour backwards. I have often used the reminder "fall back" to help me remember which way the time goes. What might life look like, however, if we see fall as a time to "fall forward?" As a community, let us take stock of our present with realism yet look ahead with hope. Collectively, let us dedicate ourselves to balance and oneness remembering, "...the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so."

Happy Fall Forward!
