Universal Pre-K4 in Mt. Pleasant
The Mount Pleasant Central School District anticipates offering Universal Pre-Kindergarten for 4-year-old children in the 2024-2025 school year in partnership with the YMCA of Central Westchester. We anticipate that it will be housed at Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne, New York starting in September 2024.
All eligible families are encouraged to apply. To be eligible for the Pre-K-4 program in the 2024-2025 school year, children must be born on or before December 1, 2020 and reside within our school district’s limits.
There are currently 112 spots available. Please see the district Universal Pre-K4 page for more information and to pre-enroll. The enrollment window will close at 4:00 p.m. on January 26th.
Library Learning with Ms. MacCullough
It’s been a busy few weeks in the HES library. We’ve started to read books that have been past Caldecott winners and have been talking about what the award means and who it is awarded to. In the next few weeks, all of the grades will practice being Caldecott judges as we read a variety of picture books and decide which one we would award the gold medal to.
2nd graders are continuing to hone their online catalog skills and are eager to look up books in the online library catalog and then locate them in the library. They’ve also started learning how to leave online reviews on their favorite books in the HES library–popular choices are The Book With No Pictures by BJ Novak, any Elephant and Piggie Book and of course, Creepy Carrots by Peter Reynolds.
1st graders have been enjoying a variety of fractured fairytales. We’ve been talking about what makes a traditional fairytale and then what authors might do to change a familiar story into something new and exciting. So far, our favorite was Cinderella–With Dogs by Linda Bailey. Instead of a fairy godmother, Cinderella ends up with a fairy dogmother who just wants Cinderella to chase squirrels instead of worrying about going to a ball.
Kindergartens have been exploring wordless picture books and learning the meaning of the saying “a picture is worth a 1000 words.” One of our favorites was Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie DePaola which told a complete story in pictures about one character’s quest for pancakes for breakfast.
We’re gearing up for One Book, One School soon so stay tuned for more information on that exciting school wide celebration. And now for a few pictures of the students enjoying their time in the HES Library.
Ms. Dwyer will be working with students in the library through February 9th. Please reach out to her directly with any questions at ldwyer@mtplcsd.org.
Reminders
School Attendance
We know that the winter brings more seasonal illnesses and we do tend to have more absences during this time of year. Sometimes it is challenging to get our kids to school on these winter days after vacations and snow days. If you are experiencing a challenge with getting your child to school (unrelated to an illness), please reach out to Ms. Stern at astern@mtplcsd.org or Ms. Westfall at mwestfall@mtplcsd.org. We are here to support you.
Reporting Absences
When your child is absent, please log in to www.schooldismissalmanager.com to report the absence. Please include the absence reason. If your child is home due to illness, please indicate that in your communication. If your child is absent and the school is not notified, the school will attempt to contact you and will also send out an automated call.
