Nelson's Notes

We are quickly approaching the end of our first semester which provides an opportune time to begin thinking about a blueprint for charting the path ahead. In order to ensure ongoing progress toward improving the quality of instruction and realizing significant gains in student academic achievement, we must fine-tune the environment and maintain a laser like focus on student achievement goals and the path toward success.

Successful teams often adopt the Kaizen methodology in order to promote continuous improvement towards their goals. Kaizen is based on the philosophical belief that everything can be improved: Some organizations look at a process and see that it's running fine; Organizations that follow the principle of Kaizen see a process that can be improved. This means that nothing is ever seen as a status quo – there are continuous efforts to improve which result in small, often imperceptible, changes over time. As a result, all of these incremental changes add up, and make a significant positive impact on the team.

As we prepare for the second semester, let’s establish a sense of urgency as it relates to student learning and achievement. Time is ticking! How much growth will we make this school year? What will you do to improve the learning process in your environment? How will you use specific student data to provide targeted instruction? Start thinking about your plan of action and execution!

At Kimberlin, EVERYONE is involved in making improvements.

Favorite Things Game Presented by the Sunshine Committee

In lieu of Secret Santa, we thought we would try something new! It’s called the Favorite Things Game! Please bring 5 of the same favorite item to share with the group. Each gift/collection of gifts should be valued at $5 or less, totaling no more than $25. After the gift exchange you will leave with 5 new favorites!

When you arrive at the party, place your five gifts on the table. Write your name on five slips of paper and throw them in a big bowl. One person will be the Master of Ceremonies and select one slip of paper from the bowl. Once your name is called, you go to the table and select the gift of your choice. This will be repeated until everyone has five gifts.
