LHS Weekly Update
September 2, 2022
A Note from the Principal
It has been an exciting start to the school year. The welcoming, supportive, and successful culture of Lansing High School is evident in everything we do. Students are supportive of each other, helpful to all, and eager to succeed. Staff members focus in ensuring all students succeed and building positive mentoring relationships with students.
In the first Weekly Update, pep assembly, and class introductions we encouraged students to get involved in sports, activities, and clubs. We also talked about what class involvement looks like.
In September, we will focus on intentional improvement. There are many ways for students to get better - from trying more challenging assignments to asking questions for better understanding. Our CCR classes are great times to focus on this and have support from a teacher. On Mondays students will work with their CCR teacher to check in on grades, missing assignments, and plans to improve. Tuesdays and Thursdays provide opportunities for students to travel to classes for make up work, tests, or additional help. On Wednesdays, CCR classes work on building supportive relationships since their group is together for 4 year. Fridays students can complete work or travel to scheduled clubs.
Parents, you have a great opportunity to talk to your student about ways to get better each day. Parents have access to Canvas courses as observers and can see their student's grades, assignments, and assignment submissions.
Its a great day to be a Lion!

Staff Recognition -
Kimberly Schelerth is a morning supervisor at the student/activity entrance for a couple weeks. I want her to be recognized for her extreme energy and always upbeat interactions with all students that come into the building. Many times, after the kids have walked by her I have noticed that they are smiling and nodding their heads. She never lets one student get by her without saying hi or good morning to them. For some students this may be the only positive reaction they get in the mornings.
If you want to see what a great, interactive teacher looks like, please stop by in the morning at LHS this week and see Kimberly in action. Better yet come in the activity doors and have her greet you as well. She truly is an amazing person for all our kiddos. I only wish I could have her here all year long at the activity entrance.
Each week we'll thank a staff member in our Weekly Update. If you would like to nominate a staff member for the great things they are doing for our school, please email the information to alan.penrose@usd469.net.
Congrats Mona Hauver - LHS traveling award winner
Mr. White presented Ms. Hauver the award and says that she makes his job easier, is always smiling, and "exemplifies grace and kindness."

Benefits to taking the WorkKeys:
- Measures the workplace skills that can affect your job performance
- Measures critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving techniques for situations that occur in the workplace.
- Measures skills that individuals use when they read and comprehend graphical materials to solve work-related problems. (charts, graphs, diagrams, etc)
- Measures skills that individuals use when they read workplace documents and use that information to make job-related decisions and solve problems. (includes: messages, e-mails, letters, directions, signs, bulletins, policies, regulations, etc)
- Students can earn a credential that verifies foundational workplace skills called the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC).
- With results, students and families can compare skills on the WorkKeys to the skill levels of occupations.
