New Positive Initiative at HMES! Blue Tickets!
So many positive things are happening at HMES each day...our students are working hard and our teachers are working even harder! Beyond academics, our teachers are shaping students' communication abilities, language skills, influencing skills, emotional empathy, and leadership traits. In order to recognize these skills along with showing examples of being respectful, responsible, safe, and kind, all staff members will be handing out blue tickets when we see students going above and beyond (see example above). When a student is given a blue ticket, half will come home (please ask your child why they got the ticket and from who) and the other half will go in an envelope in their classroom. On Fridays, our awesome SCA officers will collect all the tickets from the classrooms for a drawing on the Monday morning broadcast (1 student name drawn per grade level). Students whose names are drawn will be getting a certificate, special commemorative prize, and eventually a choice of a non-material prize such as lunch with a special adult in the school (we will continue to develop the program's depth and breadth). On top of this, students will be recognized on the website and social media (Facebook and Twitter). You can do your part by continuing to encourage your child to be kind to everyone all the time!

One School, One Book
Dear Families,
Throughout the month of March, Haymarket Elementary will be participating in a school-wide book club, called One School, One Book. Each class will be reading The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney. It is told from the perspective of the class pet, a hamster named Humphrey.
As we read about Humphrey’s adventures, we will learn new vocabulary words and facts about hamsters. Classes will discuss the book, do fun activities related to the story and answer trivia questions about each chapter with the help of our student led broadcast team. We are excited to explore Humphrey’s world together! Also, because the readability level is 3rd grade, ALL 3rd grade students will each get their own copies!
You’re invited to join us on Tuesday, April 9th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm for our Family Literacy Night. We will celebrate the end of our One School, One Book event!
**There will be limited copies of the book available for sale at the book fair. **
Scholastic Book Fair! April 8th-12th

Kindergarten Registration
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION!
(please call the front office if you can help during any of the times below)
Parents of children who will enter kindergarten next school year should make note of two important dates. Kindergarten registration will be held at Haymarket Elementary School at the following times:

(closed 12:00pm -12:30pm for lunch)
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Thursday, April 11th
10:00 pm – 3:00 pm
(closed 12:00pm -12:30pm for lunch)
If you can't make these dates, please call Mrs. Kennedy at 703-468-2800 to make an appointment. It is important to make every effort to register on one of these registration days so we have an idea of how many new kindergartners we will have and how big our classes will be.
When parents of children who speak or understand a language other than English register their child, they will be asked to call Central Registration at Stonewall Middle School to make an appointment for an English Language evaluation.

Notes from the Nurse
Fire Lanes and Pick-up/Drop-off
As a reminder, please work to communicate with your school community that it is important to keep fire lanes clear of vehicles at all times. I know this can be challenging with limited parking, however, Risk Management has received an increasing number of concerns regarding this, as well as the Fire Marshall. Risk Management has been working with security patrols and schools to address this concern.
Also please Remember we can not call students down to the office until the parent is physically in the office so we can take advantage of all the instructional time we have! Please show up a little early for appointments. Thank You!
