5th GRADE Mountain Lions
Week 2 with Mrs. Anderson
Learning Together in 5th Grade
Language Arts
In language arts this week we read "Thunder Rose," which is a Tall Tale. It was a creative and fun story, rich in figurative language which the students enjoyed reading. We also examined "Cause and Effect", subjects, predicates, homonyms, similes, metaphors, idioms, alliterations, and expository text. Students did a great job utilizing the weekly vocabulary words to write a letter to someone. They also started on their own Tall Tale. As required weekly, students work on their spelling words, vocabulary and hard work is celebrated by playing bingo.
Next week we will continue learning about fiction with an excerpt from "Island of the Blue Dolphins" and focus on theme, setting, independent and dependent clauses and a set of study skills students can use when they read any text. It's called SPQ3R, and next week ask your children what it means!
Math
Next week we will finish up learning and reviewing Understanding Place Value before we have our test and proceeding to performing mathematical operations with decimals.
Science and Social Studies
Next week we will review and have a chapter 1 test and move into the study of cells which will prepare the students for studying the human body systems.
Social Studies gave students an overview to the branches of government, democracy, population, free enterprise and regions.
The fifth grade is proud to carry the tradition of raising the flag at Merryhill Summerlin and leading the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. This week, we learned more about the flag and the tradition of folding the flag and how to honor it. All members of the fifth grade class will have an equal opportunity to be part of the morning and afternoon team to raise, lower and fold the flag.
Next week we have a quiz on our introduction to our Social Studies overview, and begin learning about Life in the Western Hemisphere.
