LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! June 4, 2018
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
It is so hard to believe that this is the last day of school. Tomorrow, the desks and chairs will be...EMPTY! I am very sad to see this group go, but so incredibly proud of their work this year. With smiles and tears, I reflect back on the very special memories of every one of the students. I am, once again, overwhelmed by your generosity. I so appreciate the kind notes and special gifts. I truly feel loved!
My end of year gift to the students is the book The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. This has been our read aloud for the last month, but we are only about 1/2 way through. (I kind of did that on purpose!) This is a great book to read TOGETHER. It is a difficult book, but it is filled with a lot of suspense and action! The students are able to make many connections to what they have learned during our Egypt unit. They actually figured out some of the clues before I did! Use the questions below as conversation starters as you read the book. Trust me...you will be amazed at what your kids know about Egypt! At the very end of this page, you will find a link to download a PDF version of our Egyptian Memories.
In this newsletter, please find photos from rollerskating and our Minute to Win It Celebration! . I hope you have enjoyed these "snapshots" into your child's days in Third Grade. I think we have had a lot of fun together and cherish the memories we have made. Please scroll to the bottom of this page to see our End Of Year Memory Video. My 16-year-old told me to apologize for it...I evidently don't know how to take pictures appropriately with my phone! I learned a thing or two and will do better next time! I hope you enjoy it anyway!!
Thank you for your continued support throughout the school year. I couldn't have done this without your help!
I hope you have a fun-filled summer! Enjoy every moment!

THE RED PYRAMID QUESTIONS for STUDENT-PARENT DISCUSSION
- How people (and gods) reenact the past is a major theme in the book. Which characters seem stuck in the past, doomed to replay it, and which characters are able to adapt and move forward?
- Of the five gods released from the Rosetta Stone, which would you prefer to have as a guest in your house, and why?
- How are Sadie and Carter's narration styles different, and what does this tell us about their personalities?
- In what ways is The Red Pyramid like a fairy tale? Think about the family relationships, magical helpers, and quest aspects.
- Do you think raising Sadie and Carter apart was the best way to go about things? What would you have done differently?
- Did the ending surprise you? What didn't you see coming, and why do you think that is?
- What type of Egyptian magic are you drawn to? How do you think your own skills might fit in with the events of the book?
- Name 5 connections to The Red Pyramid and the lessons in class. How were they similar? Different?

SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Summer is also a time for relaxing. Continue to practice Yoga Calm and Mindfulness strategies. They especially come in handy when you are super hot and waiting in a LONG line at an amusement park! Create new routines that include a little time for yourself.
Above all, PLEASE don't forget to read this summer! The "summer slide" is a real thing. Students can avoid that pitfall simply by READING each day. Read in the car, on a boat, in a hammock, on your bed, in your favorite "quiet place" at home or away. Read all types of books or magazines. Find your passion and research it! Become the teacher and tell your family all about it! Don't forget about our Red Rock Million Minute Reading Challenge!
Seek out opportunities in the community for NEW experiences to continue to learn and grow. No matter what you do...have FUN doing it!
