Falco March Newsletter 2019
Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Families,
Thank you for all your understanding as we powered through inclement weather. The last few days of sunshine have reminded me that we are entering Spring. The warmth of the sun and the upcoming Spring Break really puts smiles on our students’ faces.
Our 6th grade students all came back from Outdoor School happy and tired. All of the camps had snow at some point of the camp though it seemed that Cedar Ridge got more than their share. Thank you to all the teachers that accompanied the students as well as though that stayed behind with students providing them with a rich experience while at school.
Student phones continue to be distraction for students and there is a steady stream of constant social media by students that is occurring. I would really encourage all parents to check your students’ phones for the inappropriate social media and phone use during the school day. Phones are a wonderful way for families to stay connected with their students, but we have an “off and away” policy during the school day. We currently allow students to use their phones in the cafeteria at lunch time. Phones are not allowed to be used in restrooms at any time during the school day. Students are always welcome to come to the office during the school day to call parents using an office phone.
We were hoping that the front office and teachers moving into new classrooms would be able to get it done prior to Spring Break. Due to a delay in the delivery of materials, that move will not happen until mid-April. We are disappointed that the move is slightly delayed, but continue to be amazed how the construction company remains so close to schedule.
Have a wonderful Spring Break everyone.
Shirley Brock

State Testing is Coming in April
Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS, former known as SBAC) will be the week of April 29-May 3. We wanted to give you the date with plenty of notice to avoid making appointments for your child that may potentially pull them out of school. All students will be tested in Math and English Language Arts. Eighth grade students will also be tested in Science.
Here are some good habits to encourage now:
•Eat a good breakfast every morning
•Get plenty of sleep at night
•Come with a charged Chrome Book everyday
•Be on time to school each morning

Do We Have More Mirrors or Windows?
In March, I’ll be using library time to discuss mirrors and windows - but not the kind on/in the wall. How can books be a mirror or a window?
“The phrase “mirrors and windows” was initially introduced by Emily Style for the National SEED Project. A mirror is a story that reflects your own culture and helps you build your identity. A window is a resource that offers you a view into someone else’s experience. It is critical to understand that students cannot truly learn about themselves unless they learn about others as well.” (Moran)
It’s important to have a diverse library so we can offer the mirrors and windows our students need. Ask your child what he/she is reading. Does your child read more mirrors, more windows, or an equal amount of each? Read Kimberly Moran’s article in We Are Teachers and learn about the importance of diverse reading. https://www.weareteachers.com/mirrors-and-windows/
(Moran)
What Are Mirrors and Windows? - WeAreTeachers
A good teacher works hard to develop relationships with students in order to help them identify their place in the world. A great way to help children do this effectively is to introduce stories and materials that act as mirrors and windows. You may have heard the term “mirrors and windows ...
