Principal's Message
Hello Chapman Families!
It was wonderful to so many of you at the Spaghetti Together event last week! Thank you to our PTA, staff, and many volunteers who made the event possible. I had a blast, and I hope you and your family did too.
Conferences are this Wednesday and Thursday. This is an important time to learn about your child's progress, and teachers have been working hard to prepare information that will be shared with you. Please note that, per PPS elementary practice, there will be no formal report cards this quarter as conferences are the time for you to learn about your child's academics.
With as the upcoming cornucopia of days that will be missed this month (and next), having some tools to keep young minds thinking and learning can be useful. One of my favorite learning apps is Bedtime Math. This app uses various news stories to create math problems for all ages. When my own children were younger we called it dinnertime math and it sparked some very fun (and funny) conversations around the dinner table.

Counselor's Corner
Hi there Chapman Community
The school year has been racing by so quickly, we nearly sped past our Counselor Corner in the Chimney Flyer. I’m Ariel Frager, the full time school counselor on the main Chapman campus. My colleague Ms. Allie Penix is our half time counselor working with our Kindergarten team at the Ramona.
On the main campus I am continuing to teach mindfulness in the classrooms and often use mindfulness based strategies to support students when I work with them individually. I have already completed the 15 lesson series with all of our 1st grade classes and the teachers are incorporating mindfulness into their daily classroom routines. I am currently teaching in two 4th grade classes and some of these students are receiving mindfulness instruction for the third year in a row. I can really see how the seeds of mindfulness that were planted when they were in 2nd grade are beginning to flourish with the entire class being able to easily settle in for a few minutes of still silence. The students have many insightful things to say about being aware of what is happening for them in the present moment.
Please join me on November 17 immediately after Roundup for our next Mindfulness for Parents meeting. I look forward to sharing with our parents some of the mindfulness practices we are doing in the Chapman classrooms.
Best,
Ariel Frager,
Chapman School Counselor
Reminder from Safe Routes to Schools
It is survey time for Safe Routes! Families of K-8th grade students will receive the survey in mailboxes this week. We survey parents and guardians in the fall and spring of each school year to help us learn how families are getting to/from school, what barriers families face, and how to make program improvements. The results also help us secure funding for projects like improved crossings, sidewalks, and bike safety for more schools. To see a school report from the survey information, check out this link.
We would love to get back as many surveys as possible from each school, so if you could help us promote it at your school that would be great. The deadline is November 10th and respondents are entered to win one of four prizes, including $50 gift cards.
Please do not photocopy surveys, they are color-coded for distance from school. The paper copies are also translated into the following languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, and Traditional Chinese. We do have an online survey, though only in English: saferoutesportland.org/survey.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing the responses from your schools.

Shoppers for Thanksgiving Outreach Baskets
We are in need of volunteers to help shop for Thanksgiving Food Baskets and Winter Break Baskets to support our community!
We can't do these baskets without our volunteer helpers! Please consider donating some time. Thank you so much for helping make this a wonderful season for all Chapman families!
Fall Book Harvest
So far the Chapman community has donated over 1,200 books for the Children’s Book Bank, which will benefit local children in need. Please continue to bring in new and gently used books through November 9.
