Message From Dr. Cole
Dear Families,
On behalf of the staff of The Lincoln Academy, we would like to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving! We hope you have time to celebrate with your family and friends during this holiday season. One of the TLA virtues is GRATITUDE: choosing to notice and appreciate things in our life, things in others, and things in the world. We hope you take time this holiday to talk with your scholars about gratitude and celebrate one another. Have fun, laugh, smile and enjoy your time together. Thank you for being amazing partners, advocates and supporters of the work we are doing here at The Lincoln Academy. We are truly thankful for being able to serve your scholars.
In Gratitude,
Dr. Cole

Digging Dinosaurs at the Burpee Museum
Last week second grade scholars went to the Burpee Natural History Museum to learn more about dinosaurs. This is an extension of their current literacy unit. Scholars launched their learning about the study of fossils and paleontologists through the unit guiding question, “What do paleontologists do?” In the first part of the unit, students engaged in a close read aloud of the text Stone Girl Bone Girl by Laurence Anholt. Because this is a narrative non-fiction text, students interact with the literacy standards as they learn about Mary Anning, her love for discovering fossils and her significance as a fossil hunter.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears in K4
The K4 101 scholars started their Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They already had a background for the story from our math lessons this year, which made it a very exciting teacher moment as they began to read parts of the story with me! After the scholars completed the listening portion and the comprehension check, they got to really dive into the story and make oatmeal! They had so much fun making the oatmeal in the crockpot, and for snack today they got to decide if the taste of the oatmeal was something that was “just right” for them or not as they tasted it.

High School Study Hall Update
We want every scholar to be successful at TLA! All 9th grade scholars are required to take first semester study hall. Scholars may take a study hall every semester if they feel it helps them academically. Moving forward scholars with more than one failing grade or a GPA of less than 2.0 will be required to take a study hall as well. This will provide the scholar with time to work on homework and study for assessments.
Career Chat with Ms. Benisch
Scholars have been busy completing their initial Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs). Scholars write and draw about their areas of strength, growth, character, careers, goals, and what is important to them. Scholars in all grades at TLA write mission statements. These plans are reviewed mid-year and at the end of the year. Your child's ILP will be coming home for parent review, if you have not seen it already.
Blackhawk Technical College welcomed our 6th grade class and a handful of high schoolers for a college visit. While visiting the campus scholars listened to an admissions presentation, toured the campus, and met with instructors and students in IT, Education, Healthcare, and Culinary. Scholars were given an information bag and had the opportunity to win a tshirt too.
