Color Wars
The blue team is still out in front, but the yellow and orange teams and shortened the gap.
Checker Champion
Senior Chase Pierce fell just short of taking the first ever Genoa Checker Challenge Title. Chase fell to Mr. Hirt in classic battle of staff vs. students. Chase did secure 90,000 for the Seniors and the Green team.
Class Wars
The Junior class takes the lead in a close battle between the Juniors and Freshman.
Guidance News
Genoa High School is proud to announce that we are one of the first schools to join a movement for students in Ohio called the "Be Present Campaign."
The Be Present campaign educates and empowers peers, friends, classmates and siblings of at-risk youth to “step up” and provide needed support. It also makes youth more aware of and able to address their own emotional state. With their own cups “full,” they become more willing and able to step up and speak out in a supportive manner.
On Wednesday, October 24th, we will be kicking off this initiative with an assembly put on by the founder and creator of the movement, Javier Sanchez.
Assembly Day Details:
Date - 10/24/18 ~ Assembly from 9:30-10:15am
Post assembly workshop for 20 students (8 Youth to Youth students + 12 others who will be chosen) ~ 11:02-11:42am
Please check out these two short videos below to help you learn more about the campaign:

Food For America
This organization is a satellite program of Penta. On October 5th, Students from the Ag Business class went to the elementary school to educate the kindergartners about farming. Amanda Partin, Tyler Traver, Greg Clark, and Jordan Meek taught about sheeps and cattle while letting the kids pet them to become familiar with the livestock. Kalyee Whited and Noah Koch taught about photosynthesis and incorporated ice cream into their lesson plan to grab the kids attention! Andrew Bench, and Alex Duran spoke about farm machinery and allowed the children to get up inside and have a look at how the equipment works. Bobby Bench, Brian Martin, and Keerstin Pelow educated the children about irrigation and showed the students how to plant flowers while letting them make their own irrigation system. Natalie Pearson and Jason Lipps talked about how plants benefit from our waste which allows them grow better. Overall, it was a great learning experience for both the kindergartners and the high schoolers who got to enhance their public speaking skills and get the experience of being a teacher.

This week's featured employer in Ottawa County is Materion. Materion is headquartered in Cleveland, OH, but has a local presence near Elmore and Oak Harbor. Our local Materion is a manufacturer of beryllium products for medical devices, nuclear technology, and space exploration. What a great way to put the content you learned in Mrs. Neary's and Mrs. Richard's classes to use!

Quiz Bowl Goes to NBC 24
Quiz Bowl UpDate
The Comets soared high in this week's Quiz Bowl meet! Coming out of the night with a score of 3-1, one of which was a victory over Bowling Green. Although the victory was hard fought, it proved one essential piece of information to the GHS team, that they are capable of hanging with the big dogs and will not be kicked off the porch. Throughout the night the team displayed a vast improvement in it’s communication and guessing ability, further cementing the bond that has been created between the varsity team. At the end of the hard fought night of academic trivia, our players came out with some pretty good figures. Matthew Robinson finished with a score of 31, Emma Lau with a final score of 9, first time player Alayna Nowak with a score of 3 and Cole Millhime with a score of 1. All in all, the team is doing well, and with a little luck and a lot of practice, the Genoa Team may just be able to become the biggest dog on the porch.

Weekly Fun FACTS with: Cole Waters
From the Desk of Mr. Ohlemacher
Dear Comet Nation,
This week I spent the majority of Monday and Tuesday in Columbus at the OASSA (Ohio Association for Secondary School Administrators) annual conference. In attendance were school leaders from hundreds of Ohio school districts.
There were two feelings I left the conference with. The first was the feeling of comfort in knowing every other school leader faces the exact same challenges we face here in Genoa. The other feeling I had was a sense of pride in the work we do here at GHS to support our students in every way possible.
The reality of all of our lives is that we face challenges on a daily basis and will continue to face challenges every day. Life is far less about what happens to us and much more about our reaction to what happens. Life is not fair, but it’s worth it!
Below you’ll find nearly 5+ minutes from actor Matthew McConaughey I hope you enjoy.
5 Minutes For the Next 50 Years of Your Life.
