Living History: Bill Mercer

Join The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza for an intimate and interactive conversation with award-winning veteran sportscaster Bill Mercer, a 2002 inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. As a broadcaster with CBS affiliate KRLD Radio and Television in Dallas in 1963, Mercer covered the breaking news of the Kennedy assassination, reporting live from Dallas police headquarters. At a midnight press briefing on November 22, 1963, Mercer was the first to initially inform suspect Lee Harvey Oswald that he had been formally charged with the murder of President Kennedy. Mercer is co-author of the memoir, When the News Went Live: Dallas 1963 (2004). This interactive discussion will feature photographs and KRLD-TV video footage from the Museum’s Collection.

An extremely rare astronomical event takes place on
Monday morning, November 11, 2019 — transit of Mercury!
During this exciting transit event, orbiting Mercury will pass directly between the Earth and Sun, and we will aim our telescope safely at the Sun to observe the dark silhouette of Mercury! This is a once-in-a-lifetime event that students and teachers can witness in the classroom during our videoconference. Students will take a brief helicopter tour of the UT McDonald Observatory and see one of the world's largest telescopes used by astronomers to detect planets orbiting other stars. Weather permitting, students will make real-time observations of the planet Mercury and the Sun, make science drawings of both, and see demonstrations that explain why Mercury (and Venus) transits occur.
Clever Coyotes

Coyotes are a common species of wild dog in Texas and across much of the United States. During this program, you will get to see a live coyote up close. We will discuss their adaptations, diet, and how they are adapted to many habitats. We will even play some calls of coyotes in the wild.

Dive into the world of oceanography and explore the chemistry, biology, and conservation of the deep blue sea. Put on your lab coat and join me as we explore pH, salinity, and other aspects of seawater chemistry. Then change into your wetsuit and take a dip into the ocean zones and learn about the creatures that live in each ocean environment.

Myths and Unsolved Mysteries of the Texas Revolution

What were the causes of the Texas Revolution? What key players and events helped a small group of revolutionaries achieve independence from Mexico? There are some mysteries to the story we may never solve. Students will sort through the fact and fiction of this epic moment in Texas history through an artifact adventure and discover why the Texas Revolution is crucial to understanding American history.

Students will explore the ancient board game of Patolli and its social and economic role in Mayan society during the Harvest Season. Students will view and discuss a Mayan artifact reflecting the god of Games, Macuilxochitl, and the god of Maize, Popol Vuh. Students will learn and play the game of Patolli after designing their own game board with personalized Mayan glyphs.
