Volume 6: Financial Literacy
Financial literacy plays an important role in our district ACP process. Our students examine their personal interests and strengths, explore a variety of careers paths, plan their path to reach personal and career goals, and get a head start on that path while in high school. These components are wrapped in a comprehensive economics and financial education that starts in elementary school and intensifies as a student nears graduation.
In our elementary schools, we partnered with the Sheboygan Consumer Credit Counseling Service to participate in the Money Smart Week Kids Read Program. The program benefits 5-8 year old children by introducing basic financial concepts through an engaging kids book Count on Pablo by Barbara deRubertis.
In our middle schools, many new Junior Achievement programs were brought to the classroom. Scroll down to learn more about Junior Achievement and the important role it plays in our community.
In our high schools, all Juniors at North and South High Schools were part of a Personal Finance Experience. This was the third consecutive year of the event at South and the first at North. In total, over 400 students participated in the simulations that places each student in the early years of their adult life in their chosen career with a monthly salary based on regional averages. The students must complete the simulation by visiting every station where they make spending decisions based on lifestyle preferences, available income, and a little bit of fate thrown in. Approximately 100 community members from local companies volunteered their time, providing professional expertise to students as they navigated the simulation. A special thank you to the event sponsors, Kohler Credit Union and Leick Home!
In Sheboygan, there are JA programs at all levels starting in kindergarten and concluding with high school programs in economics and entrepreneurship. This year we added the JA It's My Future program to the required 8th grade Business Education course at Farnsworth, Horace Mann and Urban. The course is a perfect compliment to the ACP work already being done in our middle schools. Recently, we redesigned the curriculum for our elective 7th grade Business Education course to integrate five new JA programs!
One of the more important features of JA is the classroom volunteer. Across the nation, there are 243,756 classroom volunteers from all walks of life, including: business professionals, college students, parents, and retirees. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of the organization. We are fortunate to be supported by many local volunteers who bring their wealth of skills and experiences to the classroom. What is INSPIRE Sheboygan County?
INSPIRE Sheboygan County helps your student achieve his/her career goals by bridging the gap between classwork and the work world. INSPIRE creates a way for students and job-seekers to actively interact with area employers and career coaches. By encouraging your child to take advantage of the tools, you can help them discover the career path that is right for them and to attain their career goals. Go here with your high school-aged child to view and make a request from the many activities offered by our local employers.
