Hello Families,

Have you ever asked your kids to take out the trash or help with the dishes, and they look at you as if you just violated their 24/7 right to play? Or is that just my kids? It's easy to think work is an interruption in our life, but work brings benefits too, and life is all about balance.

The motto this week is: I plan my day to make enough time for work, sleep, and free time each day.

It can be quite common for kids (maybe all of us) to believe work is an interruption in our lives rather than a natural part of our lives. Yet we tend to value free time more than work time so, we stay up late to have more free time, or we procrastinate with our work. However, we enjoy our free time more when it is balanced by both sleep and work.

Balance is key, and it includes a good night's sleep.

Research indicates students between first and fifth grade get 10 to 11 hours of sleep, but studies show they are only getting an average of 9.5 hours. Sleep is critical, and it affects all aspects of our lives. Here's the National Sleep Foundation for more information:

We all value our free time, but there is much to value about work. Here are some of the benefits of work you can share with your children:

• Work is a way we contribute to ourselves and others.

• Work gives us a sense of purpose.

• Work is fulfilling.

The benefits of sleep are:

• Improved attention, behavior, learning, and memory.

• Better mental and physical health.

• Reduced Stress and enhanced mood.

Together we can help our students value a hard day's work and a good night's sleep.

Wishing you a wonderful week,

Danna Evans

Extracurricular Activity Tax Credit

With approximately two weeks left in the calendar year, this is the perfect time to make an Extracurricular Activity Tax Credit to West Wing School and receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction on your State of Arizona 2021 tax liability. Your school tax credit donations can provide DVUSD students with opportunities to participate in after-school and summer programs, field trips, music, and athletic programs, or any other extracurricular activity. The Arizona tax credit program (A.R.S. 43-1089.01) allows a tax credit of up to $200 for individuals and up to $400 for married couples, filing jointly, in support of extracurricular activities. More information and links to donate online are available on the DVUSD website.

If you forget to donate by the end of the year, don't worry. Donations made between January 1 and April 15 may be applied to the prior tax year. Payments made from January 1, 2022, through April 15, 2022, can be applied to an individual's 2021 Arizona Taxes.
