## Polar Express Day December 18th

Kindergarten will be having a Polar Express Day on Friday, December 18th! We will read the story, watch the movie, have a snack and wear our PJ's to school. Also your child can bring one of their favorite stuffed animals. This will be a fun way to celebrate the upcoming winter holidays!

## Monday

Today we used google earth to begin learning about maps and globes. The students enjoyed seeing our school, our town, state, Disney world, the beach and even the north pole! We had fun zooming to these different places and seeing them from above. We discussed the concept of a "bird's eye" view. We also talked about the differences between the land and water. We will be exploring maps and globes this week.

## Tuesday

Today we compared maps and globes using a venn diagram. The children discovered that these objects have some things that are the same, such as they both show places and use a bird's eye view and some things that are different, such as a globe is round and a map is flat. We also will make salt dough maps and paint them, making sure to paint the land and water different colors.

## Wednesday

We have been working on addition concepts during math time. The students are learning to add two numbers or sets together and then find the answer. We use fun games such as collect 10 and 15 and other partner adding games to practice different addition strategies. The students also explored the addition and equal symbols.

## Thursday

The students are working hard during word study time. This is a rigorous part of their learning. They are working on two letter sounds, word families and blending and segmenting words. These concepts help them in their writing as well as reading. They participate in different activities, such as sorting words and pictures, generating their own words and playing word games. They are doing well progressing in their word study skills.

## Friday

We have been enjoying Peep and Chirp videos. These characters teach us science concepts in fun ways. We have learned about mixing colors and about winter from them. We look forward to learning more science after the winter break. I have included the link here in case your child would like to check them out at home!
