The Burruss Weekly
A Note from Dr. Johnson
July 31, 2020
Hello, Burruss families!
Thank you to those who joined our virtual Sneak-a-Peeks for 1st-5th Grade and Specials today! If you missed the Zoom meeting with your child's teacher, teachers will be reaching out to review information with you next week. We are hosting our Kindergarten families individually with the teachers to allow our youngest Burruss Beavers the chance to see the building and meet their teachers face-to-face.
Next week is Supply Bag pickup for all 1st-5th grade students. The supply bags are stuffed full of materials all students will need for virtual learning, plus a few fun extra surprises. Make sure you come by on your designated day to meet your teacher face-to-face and pick up your bag! Families may also pick up their pre-ordered supply kits from PTA and pre-ordered yearbooks. We do have a few extra yearbooks to sell for $20/each. See Ms. Vanessa at the front desk if you want a yearbook but didn't pre-order one last year. We will also have a Technology tent set up for families to get a Chromebook if needed, as well as information about the application for free/reduced meals.
Supply Bag Pickup & Meet the Teacher
- Kindergarten: July 31 or August 3 During Sneak-a-Peek; Sign-Up Only
- Grade 1: August 4 from 8-9am or 5-6pm
- Grades 2 & 3: August 5 from 8-9am or 5-6pm
- Grades 4 & 5: August 6 from 8-9am or 5-6pm
The first few days of school will be spent getting oriented to the online resources, getting to know one another, building relationships, team-building activities, and practicing submitting assignments, accessing lessons, etc. The schedule will be a bit different for the first few days to accommodate this plan. Content-area teaching (math, science, reading, writing, social studies, specials, MILE, etc) will begin August 10, but please do not wait until then to log on! We want to spend the first few days getting oriented to the virtual classroom setup so that all students are ready to learn the new grade level standards starting August 10. Every day is important!
As we pivot now to the plan for full-virtual learning for the first 9 weeks, I am sure you have many questions about what the school days will look like for your children. Our district is committed to synchronous live instruction for students. The specific class daily schedules will be shared with families from your child's classroom teacher.
While we will still be using Schoology as our Learning Management System for all students, you will see that adjustments and improvements have been made to create the best possible virtual learning environment. With the input of parents, teachers, and MCS District leaders, our Schoology Expert Committee will work to ensure staff, students, and parents are trained, as needed, throughout the first weeks of school. Our schedule will focus on greater connections with the students and quality, live instruction through whole and small groups.
The first day of school is August 4! Students should log into Schoology to get started with their teacher! Courses will not load into Schoology until Monday, August 3. Check out the quick how-to video below for help logging into Schoology.
Think you'll need more help logging onto Schoology? Interested in how the platform works? Join us for Parent Schoology 101 on Monday, August 3 at 7pm via Zoom. The link for the meeting will be sent out Monday afternoon.
At the bottom of this email is the ALB Family Virtual Learning Guide that I emailed out a couple of weeks ago. Reattaching for your convenience!
Please continue to reach out as you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
We are #BurrussUnited!
Kind regards,
Dr. Jillian Johnson
Principal
