Professional Development Day on November 14th
Teachers will be participating in professional development sessions throughout the day.

Gratitude Gazette Continues Through November 22
If you would like to share your gratitude for SMS folks, here are the groups that we're highlighting this week:
Tuesday, November 15th - nurse and SRO
Wednesday, November 16th - media center and tech department
Thursday, November 17th - guidance counselors
Friday, November 18th - cafeteria ladies
Recipients will receive their messages at the end of each day. This was a super positive experience last year, so all SMS students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to participate.

First Trimester Ended Last Friday
Grades are due to be finalized by Tuesday, November 15th, then report cards will be published on Wednesday, November 16th.
For all classes except art and FACS, each student's first six weeks grade in a course will be averaged with the student's second six weeks grade in the course to give them a grade for the trimester. For eighth grade students in high school credit courses (algebra, health, intro to 2D art, and PE), those trimester grades will be transferred to their high school transcript.

Fall Dance
The theme is "Under the Stars."
Admission is $3 for students who did not turn in their drug free pledge. Students may want to bring extra money for snacks and drinks. Remember that all school rules apply during this dance, including dress code, cell phone storage/use, and lanyards.
Students who earn discipline on November 18th as well as students who have earned two or more demerits for aggressive or illegal behavior this school year will not be allowed to attend this dance.
Parents: Watch ParentSquare during the week of November 7th for information about signing up to be a chaperone.

Please be careful when crossing the streets, utilize sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and follow the street crossing signs.
Also, be sure that you are a positive representative of SMS when you are in the community.
Also, as Officer Nicholson reminded you during his classroom visits, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings, including traffic, at all times.
Student Handbook Update
The Scottsburg MS student handbook contains some significant updates for the 2022-2023 school year. The most significant changes took place in the discipline section.
Here are the highlights of three changes that will impact the largest number of students:
Cell phones are still not allowed to be used during the school day here at SMS. Phones are expected to be turned off and stored in lockers. Students who are carrying a cell phone or using a cell phone during the school day are in violation. The consequences for each situation are outlined in the handbook.
Second is illegal substances. This year students who have illegal substances and/or paraphernalia (most common examples are vapes, cigarettes, or alcohol) will be recommended for expulsion on the first offense.
In an attempt to be more aligned with the high school discipline policy, we will be following a progressive discipline approach. This means that when a student commits the same offense multiple times, the discipline will get progressively more serious. Each example is outlined in the doc that is provided by clicking on the picture above or via the link below.

We encourage you to read the handbook with your child(ren) and to contact us with any questions you may have.
We are looking forward to working with our students and their parents throughout the upcoming school year.
